Quick Start for WSUS Clients

CITES > WSUS > client quickstart

To install the WSUS client on a system:

  1. Download the wuau.adm file. (You will be prompted to log in to the CITES Security Wiki in order to receive the latest available file.)

  2. Log in as a user with administrative rights and run gpedit.msc.

  3. Navigate to
    Local Computer Policy
    -> Computer Configuration
    --> Administrative Templates
    and right-click on the Administrative Templates folder itself. Select Add/Remove Templates.

  4. In the Add/Remove Templates window, click Add, then browse to the location where you saved the wuau.adm file.

  5. In the main gpedit.msc window, navigate to:
    Local Computer Policy
    -> Computer Configuration
    --> Administrative Templates
    --->Windows Components
    ---->Windows Update
    and double-click Configure Automatic Updates.

  6. Confirm the following settings:
    • "Configure Automatic Updates": Click Enabled.

    • "Specify intranet Microsoft update service location": Use https://wsus.cites.uiuc.edu for both locations (or substitute a server configured in your own department if you wish).

    • "Enable client-side targeting": Enter the target group you prefer from the Application Service Packs, OS Service Packs, and All Service Packs groups. (For more information about these groups, see the target groups list on the Configuring WSUS on Client Computers page.)

    • "Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations": Choose the configuration options you prefer.

    • "No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates": Choose the configuration options you prefer.

The installation and basic configuration is now complete.
