Linux Academy Fall 2005 Course Information
Linux Academy is comprised of two non-credit courses. The basic
course will cover the basic aspects of Linux. It is intended to
cover the prerequisites for the second course, but can be taken
independently of the second course if desired. The advanced course covers
Red Hat Linux system administration, and is primarily intended
to train indivduals to the level of a junior system administrator.
Both courses are offered by Campus Information Technologies and
Educational Services (CITES). Linux Academy is taught by the CITES
Workstation Services/Systems Management Group.
Course notes will be provided. You should bring writing materials
and the provided course notes to each class.
Basic Course
Class sessions for the the Basic course will generally consist of a
lecture component and hands-on laboratory exercises. This course is
recommended for those who may not possess the prerequisites for the
Advanced class. Some aspects of this course are also applicable to
other Unix and Unix-like operating systems, including OS X.

- File Permissions
The fee for the basic course is $299 per student for the Fall 2005
session. This cost includes printed class materials.
Advanced Course
Class sessions for the advanced course will generally consist of
a lecture component, hands-on laboratory exercises, and
troubleshooting problems.
Prerequisites for advanced course
In order to obtain satisfactory results from the advanced course,
attendees must have user-level knowledge of Linux/Unix and be
comfortable at the command line prompt. Attendees must be familiar
with common Linux/Unix commands and their most commonly used
switches (e.g., ls, cd, rm, ln, mkdir). Attendees must also be
comfortable editing files using vi.

The fee for the advanced course will be $799 per student for the
Fall 2005 session. This cost includes printed class materials.
The primary instructors for both courses will be Jonathan Booth,
Chastity Blackwell and Melissa Woo with technical assistance from
David Weber and Michael Chesnut. We may also be bringing in guest
lecturers on certain topics.
