CITES VPN Configuration for Mac OS X Leopard
This page is for University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff members using Mac OS X Leopard.
If you have a guest account, you should use the guest instructions for Mac 10.5 (Leopard) instead.

Configuration and Connecting
1. Go to the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner of the top menu.
2. Select System Preferences from the drop-down menu.
3. Choose Network.

4. If you see VPN listed as an option in the left-hand menu, jump ahead to step #10. If you don't see VPN listed as an option, continue on to step #5.
5. Click the + icon in the bottom corner of the left-hand menu to add a connection.

6. In the pop-up window, from the Interface drop-down menu, select VPN.

7. From the VPN Type drop-down menu, choose PPTP.

8. Next to Service Name, enter CITES VPN (or a name of your choice).

9. Click Create.
10. In the right-hand menu, click on the drop-down menu next to Configuration , which currently says Default, and select Add Configuration.
11. Name the configuration CITES VPN or the alternate name you chose in step # 8.
12. In the right-hand menu, enter the following information:
Configuration: CITES VPN (or a name of your choosing)
Server Address: vpn3.near.uiuc.edu
Account Name: Your NetID
Encryption: Maximum (128 bit only) from the drop-down menu
13. Check the box next to Show VPN status in menu bar.

14. In order to protect your password, click on the Authentication Settings... button.
15. Click on User Authentication.
16. Make sure that the Password field is blank.*
*Note: Leaving the User Authentication field blank will require you to enter your password each time you log into the CITES VPN. CITES does not recommend storing your password or sharing it among other users of the computer. If your laptop is lost or stolen, for example, the thief could use your credentials to cause trouble that would be associated with your NetID.
17. Click OK.
18. In the Network window, click on the Advanced... button.

19. In the Session Options area, make sure that all three options are checked:
- Disconnect when switching user accounts
- Disconnect when user logs out
- Send all traffic over VPN connection
20. Click OK.
21. Click Apply. Your CITES VPN settings will now be set.
22. To connect to the CITES VPN, click Connect.
23. A pop-up window will appear, asking you to enter your password. Enter your Active Directory Password.
24. When you are connected, you will see a green circle next to the CITES VPN icon in the left-hand menu in the Network window. Your status will state Connected and your connect time will be displayed as well.

You will also see the CITES VPN icon in your menu bar, displaying four white bars and how long you have been connected to the CITES VPN.

Disconnecting from the CITES VPN using the Menu Bar
1. Click on the CITES VPN icon in your menu bar.
2. Select Disconnect. You will now be disconnected from the CITES VPN. The CITES VPN icon in your menu bar should be darkened, with no time displayed.

Disconnecting from the CITES VPN using the Network Window
1. Go to the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner of the top menu.
2. Select System Preferences from the drop-down menu.
3. Choose Network.
4. Click Disconnect. You will now be disconnected from the CITES VPN. The CITES VPN icon in your left-hand menu should have a red circle next to it, and your status should read Not Connected.
