Windows Software Update Services (WSUS)

For IT Pros
This page contains information about WSUS, an on-campus Microsoft patch repository available to IT pros.

What is WSUS?

The Microsoft Windows Software Update Service (SUS) is a tool for management and distribution of critical Windows patches. CITES is redistributing this Microsoft service on a SUS server located within the campus firewalls, for improved speed and reliability to UIUC-based client systems.

The following pages provide more information about the WSUS service on campus.

Getting started with WSUS

Introduction to WSUS describes which versions of Windows can be patched through WSUS, which patches can and cannot be downloaded from WSUS, and who is eligible for WSUS support.

CITES WSUS Target Audience explains which users should and should not use WSUS, including details about why WSUS is particularly valuable for laboratory settings and not recommended for individual end users.

Configuration for WSUS servers and WSUS clients

The WSUS model relies on a server to provide the patches to the clients which need patching. Campus administrators can create departmental secondary servers which download from the main campus WSUS server and provide departmentally approved patches to their clients.

Quick Start for WSUS Clients and Quick Start for WSUS Servers provide simplified step-by-step outlines for those who are already familiar with the process and would like a pocket-sized guide.

Configuring WSUS on Client Machines and WSUS Server Installation provide a more detailed description for those who would like more information about the configuration options available.
