New Features

  • Instant Search: Vista allows you to search your entire computer for files, directly from the Start Menu, making finding information within your computer easier than ever.
  • Security: Vista contains protection against spyware, viruses, and other unwanted software in the most secure version of Windows yet.
  • Internet Protection: Vista assists in creating a protected experience while you are online.
  • System Alerts: Vista includes alerts to warn you if you have potential hardware failure to help you avoid losing data.
  • User Account Control: Vista helps prevent unauthorized changes to settings on your computer.

System Requirements

Unlike previous versions of Windows, Vista's features depend heavily on the capabilities of the computer on which it's installed.

All PCs that meet the minimum requirements listed below (described as the Basic features) should be able to run the core elements of Vista, such as the changes in finding information, increased security measures, and improved reliability.

Some features of the Vista Aero interface require advanced hardware. Vista’s default installation is Aero, but if your computer’s system cannot handle Aero’s required settings, Vista will install itself using the highest level of settings that your system can handle.

Basic:

  • Useful for common computing needs, such as checking your email and using the Internet, without advanced visual features
  • For computers that will not support Aero - To determine if your machine can support Aero, see the Systems Requirements chart below.

Aero:

  • Provides an enhanced visual experience for users
  • Includes multiple features that enhance the appearance of your windows, taskbar, and desktop
  • For more information about Aero, see the Microsoft Windows Aero web page.

Purchasing

Can I purchase Vista through the CITES Software WebStore?

The WebStore offers Vista for student, staff, or faculty personal machine installations only.
Windows Vista Business Edition Upgrade is now available for $65 through the WebStore, with an anticipated delivery date of April 2007.

If you want to install Vista on a University-owned department machine, please contact Campus Stores.

Installation and Activation

How do I install and activate Vista once I have purchased it through WebStore?

Note: You must activate your version of Vista within 30 days of setup.

When you purchase your copy of Vista, you choose whether to pick up the CD media containing a unique installation code or have it shipped directly to you. You are allowed to use the installation code on one machine up to two times (should you need to reinstall at some point).

Activation can be completed online or by calling Microsoft if you do not have an available Internet connection.

Can I use the Vista upgrade CD to do a clean install?

You will no longer be able to perform a clean install with an upgrade CD. You will be required to have a valid version of Windows XP Home or Professional already installed on your system in order to upgrade to Vista.

For further information on this policy, please consult the following DailyTech article:
No More Clean Installs Using Upgrade Discs with Windows Vista

or read Microsoft's response:
