Frequently asked questions about
the AMP subscription program:
What is AMP?
The Apple Maintenance Program (AMP) enables you to subscribe
to software upgrades instead of purchasing them each time they
are released.
By enrolling in AMP and paying the one-time maintenance cost
you are entitled to receive all released versions of the product
until the end of the current maintenance program. You are entitled
to continue running any older version of the product if you
want, but all updates on the product are covered until the current
maintenance program expires.
At the end of that time, you own the license for the last version
released and can either buy a new AMP subscription or just keep
using the last version available at the time of the AMP expiration,
which is currently September 22, 2008.
Some of the benefits of an AMP subscription include:
- No additional fees for major version releases during the
life of the subscription
- Option of downloading installation images for free or buying
media
- An AMP subscription at work entitles you to run that version
at home for no additional cost
- You own instead of rent the program (unlike some other programs)
- You are allowed to make one backup copy of the program
- The subscription is not tied to a CPU. If you upgrade your
Macintosh, the subscription can be transferred to the new
machine.
Why should I buy an AMP subscription through
CITES?
It is much cheaper to enroll in the AMP instead of paying individually
for each product's new version.
For example, each major OS upgrade costs $69 (educational),
and there are usually at least one of those a year -- without
AMP, that would be $138 to $207 for three years (depending on
when the new versions came out).
If you buy your own AMP subscription independently from CITES,
it would cost $147, and you have to buy at least 10 to get an
AMP subscription. You would also have to buy a Mac OS
10.4 license if you didn't already have one.
Where can I buy Apple products and AMP?
The CITES Software WebStore
contains the most popular Apple products, including AMP. If
you want to purchase a product that is not online, please email
your request to webstore@uiuc.edu
and they will provide pricing and delivery information.
What if I leave the University?
You are still entitled to the new releases but will have to
send your request with your mailing address to webstore@uiuc.edu.
You will be notified of the media fee and will need to send
a personal check for the media and shipping cost to:

Where can I get help installing Mac
OS X?
The best place to get information and help installing Mac OS
X is from Apple's web site.
For general information about Mac OS X, see http://www.apple.com/macosx/.
For questions and help with the installation, Apple's extensive
Knowledge Base is the best place to start.
The Mac OS X FAQ and discussion groups at http://www.info.apple.com/usen/macosx/
will provide additional assistance.
There is also an on-campus mailing list for Mac system and
networking administrators, called "Macnet." If you
support Macs, this can be a great resource. To join the mailing
list, go to http://www-u.life.uiuc.edu/mailman/listinfo/macnet
and fill out the form.
