As the fall semester 2006 gets started, you have many ways to improve your campus computing experience. CITES has upgraded, added to, or modified several of its services. This overview of these services includes brief descriptions and links to further information.
If you have any questions about these or any CITES services, please contact the CITES Help Desk.
| CITES Express Email |
Express Email quotas increased for everyone on August 23, 2006. New features include being able to list your newest message first and receive receipts for messages that have been read. In order to manage server space better, CITES can no longer hold messages for you when you go over quota. See Managing Your Quota for tips on keeping your account under its quota. For a summary of the changes, please see CITES Express Email Changes. |
| CITES NetFiles |
NetFiles quotas increased to 500 MB on July 31, 2006. In addition, CITES has secured a site license for WebDrive, a WebDAV client for Windows that allows you to manage your NetFiles account as if it were a local drive. WebDrive is available for download from CITES Software WebStore at no charge. Not a Windows user? Check out WebDAV clients for your machine on CITES NetFiles on Your Desktop. |
| CITES Spam Control |
A new personal spam policy, "Cautious Plus," has been added to CITES Spam Control. Choosing a more aggressive personal spam policy protects your email account quota by deleting spam rather than delivering it to your mailbox, which counts against your quota. For more information on changing your Spam Control settings, see Overview of CITES Spam Control. |
| UIUCnet Wireless |
Campus has more wireless locations than ever before. Find a wireless hotspot with the CITES Network Access Maps, a searchable database of UIUCnet locations. |
| Instructional Computing Services (ICS) |
ICS upgraded the PCs in the both the Illini Union and Oregon labs. The new computers actually attach to the back of the 17" flat panel monitors, leaving more workspace for you. In the Nevada lab, you will find new iMacs with Intel Core Duo processors, which allows you to use either Macintosh OS X or Windows XP on one computer. For more information about using the computer labs, see CITES Instructional Computing Services . |
| Podcasting with CITES ICS |
CITES ICS is now hosting a pilot podcasting server. If you have MP3 audio files that you would like to publish, simply set up an account with ICS and upload your files. For more information on publishing your audio files, see ICS Projects in Development. An introduction to podcasting is available from CITES Educational Technologies; see Getting Started with Podcasting. |
| CITES Help Desk partners with the Illini Apple Center |
Customers at the Illini Apple Center whose computing questions involve CITES services will now be able to receive remote assistance by video chatting with the CITES Help Desk. The Help Desk began offering virtual consulting at the Illini Apple Center in August. For more information, call the CITES Help Desk at 244-7000. |
| Macintosh OS X license |
Discounted Apple Maintenance Program (AMP) licenses for Macintosh OS X.4 are available at a discount through the CITES Software WebStore. |
| Active Directory (AD) |
You can now reset your Active Directory password, along with all your other CITES passwords, on the Password Home Page. The Active Directory password reset tool moved to the Password Home Page in late May 2006. |
| Telecomm reports and statements |
Faculty, staff, and students can view their individual monthy billing statements and service summaries online through the Pinnacle Customer Portal. Telecommunications Unit Coordinators and other authorized employees can now view departmental service and work orders and/or monthly billing statements online with Pinnacle Advanced Reporting. Paper statements are no longer mailed. To locate or change your unit's coordinator, please contact Communications Customer Service at 333-1161. |
