Reporting Security Incidents - More Information
This page explains in more detail how to determine which level of security support is most appropriate for you.
Reporting physical threats or illegal activities
If your personal safety has been threatened, or if you have overheard or received messages that threaten to cause physical harm, damage property, or perform illegal activities, immediately contact the University of Illinois Police Department at 911 (or 9-911 from a campus phone).
Reporting a computer security emergency
For electronic information and/or computer security incidents requiring immediate attention, call a CITES Security Officer at 265-0000 (5-0000 from a campus phone).
After normal business hours, contact the CITES Operations Center at 244-1000 (4-1000 from a campus phone).
Reporting and repairing a computer that's been disconnected for security issues
If your computer has been disconnected from the campus network because it has a virus, you'll need to run the Antivirus CD to remove the infection. You can also contact the CITES Help Desk at 244-7000 or consult@uiuc.edu in order to get a copy of the CD.
If your computer has been disconnected from the network for a reason other than a virus, such as for port scanning or copyright violations, contact your departmental or housing network support staff or the CITES Help Desk for assistance in cleaning up the problem.
Reporting spam, phishing, or email abuse
If you receive spam or phishing email (email that attempts to convince you to enter password and/or credit card information into a fraudulent copy of a legitimate web site), you should forward the full email with all headers visible to report-spam@uiuc.edu.
Phishing scams should also be reported to the Federal Trade Commission at spam@uce.gov. (UCE stands for "unsolicited commercial email.")
The Email Headers page explains how to make sure you send all the information that the authorities will need to determine where the email came from.
What reporting spam can and can't do for you
Please note that this service is for UIUC faculty, staff, and students only. If you do not receive your email on a uiuc.edu server, please do not forward your spam complaint to us.
In addition, CITES Security Services cannot guarantee that we will be able to stop your spam; new spammers target new hosts all the time. However, when particular offenders continue to send large quantities of spam after being warned, CITES can attempt to filter out email from that source.
Questions or comments about campus computer security
If you have security-related questions or comments, including requests for security-related consulting, contact securitysupport@uiuc.edu.
If you have policy-related questions or comments, visit the CIO web site and/or contact cio@uiuc.edu.
Questions or comments about other computer-related issues
If you have questions or comments about non-security computer issues, try the CITES Help Desk at 244-7000 (4-7000 on campus) or consult@uiuc.edu.
