Reporting Security Incidents
Everyone can expect to experience some sort of computer-related security incident at one time or another. CITES Security Services can help pinpoint what has happened and help you prevent future problems. Please contact CITES Security Services if any of the following has happened to you:
- You have received an abusive email or instant message.
- Someone else has used your password.
- You suspect your computer has been compromised by a virus or hacker.
- You suspect someone other than you has sent email from your account.
Please use the following guidelines to find the most appropriate contact.
Emergencies

Contact campus police at 911 (9-911 from on campus). - Computer
security emergencies
Phone CITES Security Services at 265-0000 during business hours, or the Operations Center at 244-1000 after hours.Technical support staff: Please gather any relevant information such as system logs, email headers, or any forensic data collected. It will help the team analyze the problem and find a solution more quickly.
Non-emergencies

You may be sent an email explaining the cause of the problem. If not, contact the CITES Help Desk or your departmental or housing network support team for help in determining the cause and how to fix it. If you have a virus, you will probably need the Antivirus CD. - Spam, phishing,
or email abuse
Forward with full headers to report-spam@uiuc.edu and spam@uce.gov.
