What to do if You're Disconnected

If you're disconnected from the campus network, that probably means you have a virus or similar problem on your computer. For the security of the network, administrators must disconnect infected machines to prevent the spread of the problem throughout the campus.

In order to be reconnected to the network you must use the free Antivirus CD provided by CITES to clean your computer. You can pick up a free Antivirus CD and instructions from the CITES Help Desk in 1211 DCL between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm Monday to Friday.

If you'd prefer, you can download and create your own copy of the CD at https://www-s.cites-security.uiuc.edu/avcd/Current/, where you'll also find instructions on using it. Please note that the CD is updated at least once a week, so don't use it for more than a few days after you receive or create it.

When you insert the CD into the computer and restart your machine, it will run McAfee Cleanboot, which will thoroughly clean your system. The CD also contains antivirus and anti-spyware software to install so you can prevent being removed from the network again.

Once you have completed the process, you can call the CITES Help Desk (244-7000) to have your computer reconnected to the network.

Note: If you do not run the CD on your computer to clean the virus, your computer will be disconnected from the network again immediately. Do not call the CITES Help Desk until you have finished the instructions on the CD unless you need help while running the CD.
