Computer Security Month 2008

October is Computer Security Month. In 2008, CITES Security is focusing on laptop security during Computer Security Month. Here are a few helpful resources for keeping your laptop secure:

Laptop Security Resources

Register Your Laptop

The first step you should immediately take to protect your laptop is to register it with CITES Security using the new Computer Registration Tool. This will help CITES recover your laptop if it is ever lost or stolen on campus. To register your laptop, please visit: http://www.cites.illinois.edu/security/register

Install the CITES VPN

A laptop means you can work anywhere in the world, and often work on any number of wireless networks. But to make sure you're safely working online, you should connect back to campus using the CITES VPN. For more information on how to set up the CITES VPN, please visit: http://www.cites.illinois.edu/vpn

Physically Protect Your Laptop

There are good habits you can get into in order to physically protect your laptop when you are using it out in public. For some of these tips, please visit: http://www.cites.illinois.edu/security/laptop/protect.html

Attend a Laptop Clinic

CITES Security and the CITES Help Desk offer monthly laptop clinics for students, faculty and staff to have their laptops checked out and brought up to date with the latest security software. To learn more about laptop clinics, please visit: http://www.cites.illinois.edu/security/laptop/clinic

Computer Security Month Giveaways

As part of Computer Security Month, CITES Security is giving away one iPod Touch and five laptop locks (one prize per person). To enter into the contest, all you have to do is attend one of our Computer Security Month events, and/or take one of our online computer security quizzes. For each event you attend and each quiz you finish, you will receive an entry into the drawing. The more events you attend and the more quizzes that you take, the more chances you have to win. This contest is open to all University of Illinois students, faculty and staff except CITES employees.

Computer Security Month Quizzes

Each week in October, CITES Security will post a new online quiz for you to take. Every quiz that you finish will earn you another entry in our Computer Security Month giveaway.
