Common Management Agent (CMA) error during installation
If you're attempting to upgrade to VirusScan 8.5i and you receive a Common Management Agent (CMA) error message, you'll need to run an extra file to update your settings before you can complete VirusScan installation.
The CMA update file is included in the .zip archive that you downloaded from either the CITES Webstore or the CITES Wiki. Simply double-click the Common Management Agent upgrade file (named Common_Management_Agent_3.6.0.453.exe).
After the CMA upgrade has been run, you should be able to continue and install VirusScan 8.5i. If you are still having problems with VirusScan installation after running the CMA upgrade, please contact the CITES Help Desk.
Duplicate scan items if you preserve settings
During installation, if you select the option that preserves any scan settings you had configured in your previous VirusScan setup, the installer will save those settings. However, it will also add the scan settings that VirusScan 8.5i considers default options, such as startup updates and dialup updates.
Therefore, you may find that you have two entries for some scan and update types. You can remove the duplicate items and keep the set that fits your working pattern best.
Eudora errors and problem solving
"An error occurred with a temporary file while transferring your mail"
Eudora downloads messages into a temporary location (referred to as a spool folder) before sorting the messages into their final locations.
If you see the error message above, it likely means that VirusScan 8.5i detected a virus in a message while it was in the spool folder; VirusScan attempted to remove the file and confused Eudora's message processing.
Exemptions for the standard Eudora installation locations have been added to the campus-configured VirusScan 8.5i package, but you may still encounter this error if you have installed Eudora in an unusual location or have kept your configuration settings from an earlier version of VirusScan.
To prevent this problem from recurring, and to make sure that VirusScan checks messages in their final location rather than a temporary location:
- Locate Eudora's spool folder. In Windows 2000 and XP, it's generally located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\[your
username]\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\spool
or
C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\spool
If you've installed Eudora in a different location, you're more likely to receive this error. (Check the modified dates if you find duplicates.)
- Exclude the spool folder from McAfee's searches. Right click on the McAfee systray icon (found in the same bar as the Start Menu).
Click on the On-Access Scan properties... item in the right-click menu that appears.
Then choose All Processes > Detection > Exclusions > Add, and enter the location of the spool folder you found in the first step.
At this point, VirusScan will search your mail messages in their final location, not their temporary location; you shouldn't see this error message again.
