Macintosh Antivirus

There are two versions of Virex available for Macintosh operating systems at this time.

If you have a Mac OS X system, use the latest VirusScan 8.5 for Mac package.

If you have a Mac OS 9 or earlier system, use the latest Virex 6 package.

VirusScan 8.5 for Mac (available since December 2006)

Supported on

Mac OS X versions 10.4 (Tiger)

Both Intel and PowerPC architectures are supported in this release.

10.5 (Leopard) not yet supported: Antivirus software is not currently available for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). The Security Office is evaluating a new version of VirusScan for Macintosh and expects it to be available by 11/16/07.

Installation

Important: You must have an administrator user name and password in order to install and update Virex. Even if you are logged in as an administrator, you will be prompted for an administrator's user name and password during the installation and configuration processes.

Download the VirusScan 8.5 for Mac package from the CITES Software WebStore. Double-click the WebStore file (.app) in order to download the installation package, which is provided in a .zip file. Uncompress the .zip file, open the folder that it contained, and double-click the .dmg file to start the installation. Then follow the prompts provided by the installation package. (If you have an older version such as Virex installed, VirusScan 8.5 will uninstall the previous version.)

After installation, you'll need to reboot. Then you should run Disk Utility and configure your software to run and to check for updates on the schedule you prefer. Since the VirusScan for Mac package cannot be campus-modified, the manufacturer's directions and help pages remain your most detailed source of configuration information.
