I'm a guest on campus. How do I get a guest login?

Any student, staff, or faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign can create two short-term accounts for three days. Authorized guest account registrars can create more accounts for different durations. If you are attending a campus conference, your conference organizer will be responsible for creating and distributing guest accounts that are valid for the duration of your conference.

Your guest account name will resemble vpnguest1#. Your password will be automatically generated by the UIUCnet QuickConnect and VPN Guest Accounts web interface. If you lose or forget your password, ask the person who created your account to log in to the web interface and generate a new password for you.

I'm hosting guests for a few days. How do I create guest accounts?

The guest account web interface is available at:

https://ctweb1.cites.uiuc.edu/guestwireless/

Every campus user can create two guest accounts for up to three days duration. If you need to create more guests or for a longer period of time, such as for a conference or departmental event, you'll want to become an authorized guest account registrar.

Once you have been authorized, you can create many guest accounts at once, select a broader range of dates, and download data about the accounts you create in a .csv file format.

Up to six members of a department can be authorized registrars; the application form is available in Microsoft Word or PDF format.

What can a guest account be used for?

You can use a guest account to access the campus network and/or the Internet from UIUCnet Wireless (if you have a wireless card) or UIUCnet Walkup (if you have an Ethernet port).

You can authenticate yourself through either UIUCnet QuickConnect or the campus VPN with your guest account.

For more information about using guest logins with the VPN system, see Which method should I use to connect?.

I'm having problems getting my guest account to work. Who should I contact?

You should contact the individual who gave you your guest account. He or she can log in to the guest account web interface to check to see if your login has expired or CITES Security has needed to disable your account.

CITES Security may disable a guest account if your guest's computer is infected with a virus or if he/she is found to be violating the Campus Acceptable Use Policy or Terms of Use .

Important: Before creating a new guest account for a user who has been disabled by CITES Security, you should contact the CITES Help Desk (open weekdays from 8:00 to 5:30 CST) to determine what the cause of the problem was and how to correct it. If your guests continue to cause security problems, CITES Security will disable your ability to create new guest accounts.
