UI Public Wireless and Email

CITES > public wireless > email

There are a few restrictions on what campus visitors can and cannot do with email over the UI Public Wireless service.

UI Public Wireless users can

  • Send and receive Web-based email of any type (Hotmail, Gmail, etc.)
  • Receive email through a software client (Eudora, Outlook, etc)
  • Send email through a software client to non-UIUC mail servers

However, UI Public Wireless users can't

  • Send email through a software client to campus mail servers

Since UI Public Wireless is a separate network located outside the campus firewalls and is not intended for use by University affiliates, the ability to send email through the campus mail servers is blocked.

Most visitors will not have configured their email clients to send mail through the campus mail system, and University affiliates should connect to the UIUCnet Wireless network instead. (UIUCnet Wireless is also available in every location where UI Public Wireless is available.)
