Requesting additional wireless

CITES > project status > campus network upgrade > wireless > request

Units can make requests for any additional wireless coverage that is not covered by the Campus Network Upgrade Project. For more information about any of the following requests, contact the CITES Network Design Office at ndo@uiuc.edu.

Full-building wireless requests

CITES can procure and install the equipment for additional requests for UIUCnet wireless access, but the unit must be willing to fund the additional coverage. Sometimes this cost is greater than others because each building is different. During the wireless survey for a given building, units who request the option of full-building coverage are charged with the additional costs. Some of the determining factors for the amount of additional equipment needed for full-building access include the proximity of private spaces to public spaces and the number of wireless access points that must already be inserted in the building. (See information on wireless equipment.)

Outdoor wireless requests

Currently, no outdoor UIUCnet wireless coverage is actively provided on the Urbana campus. Occasionally, wireless coverage may "leak" from a building to an outdoor area. However, if a unit has a particular need for outdoor coverage and is willing to fund the equipment and its installation, CITES will facilitate providing that coverage to the extent that the technology permits.

Private wireless

Units may request private wireless (“Independently Secured Departmental Wireless”) in their offices rather that UIUCnet. This must be funded by the department and must not interfere with the “public space” UIUCnet Wireless coverage.
