CITES > project status > campus network upgrade > Email to CITES-Techsupport on Iris 5.0

April 11, 2006

The CITES Iris Development Team is pleased to announce the pending release of the Iris 5.0 switch management tool. Iris version 5.0 contains mostly changes to the user interface, in an effort to create a more quick and efficient user experience. Iris 5.0 will go into production next Monday, April 17th, by 8:00am. Due to the large number of updates in the user interface of Iris, you may wish to familiarize yourself with the new version prior to its production release. Please see below for more information on accessing the Iris 5.0 Release Candidate.

MAJOR CHANGES

Some of Iris 5.0 changes and updates include:

  • The ability to sort table rows by different columns (click on table column header name).
  • The ability to filter (hide) table rows by keyword values on one or more columns (type search terms into table column header text-box, right below the column name).
  • Tool-tips added to all links and a number of other UI elements.
  • External context-sensitive links to CITES Contact Manager and campus maps.
  • More "lateral" navigation links within Iris that allow you to flip different data views, networks, and devices, in a more direct manner.
  • Many interface elements include port counts, so you have some indication of the density and distribution of your network ports.
  • Tables that display MAC addresses now also display registered manufactures (OUI owners).
  • "Instant" port enable/disable features on many table displays, including the Port Status Overview, MAC Addresses view, and MAC
    Address Search Results view.

BROWSER SUPPORT

The interface and JavaScript code has been tested under the following browsers:

  • IE6 under Windows XP
  • Firefox 1.5 under Windows XP
  • Safari 2.0.3 under Mac OS X 10.4
  • Firefox 1.5 under Mac OS X 10.4

It is very likely to work under other standards-based browsers, but these are the ones we will attempt to support.

KNOWN ISSUES

There is a known issue with the accuracy of port count data. If a switch port is moved from one network to another, the port counts for the two networks involved in the change will be temporarily out of date and will not immediately reflect the actual port counts on the switch. At this time port counts are not updated until our nightly data run.

There is also one additional issue with IE6 (and, so far, IE7b2). Re-sorting a table will cause any checked "row checkboxes" to become unchecked. The only work-around is to avoid re-sorting a table if you have any rows checked and would like to preserve the state of those checkboxes. Hiding/showing table rows with filters does not effect the state of the checkboxes.

KICK THE TIRES

The new 5.0 version of Iris will officially go into production Monday, April 17th, by 8:00am. Because the user interface has undergone such extensive developments, we are opening up "sneak preview" access to the current Iris 5.0 Release Candidate to ALL Iris customers. This should provide customers with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new Iris 5.0 interface before the current production version is updated.

For the remainder of this week, the Iris 5.0 Release Candidate is available to all Iris customers on the server we normally use for beta testing, and can be accessed at:
