Campus Network Upgrade Project
November 2005
Kickoff meetings and construction start in October 2005
During the week of October 17, construction began on the Architecture
Building and the Rehabilitation Clinic. Also, four building kickoff
meetings were held in October, including University High School, the
Surveying Building, the Animal Science Laboratory, and the Meat Sciences
Laboratory.
WTC presents findings
Western Telecommunications Consulting, Inc., (WTC) made their final
presentation to the Academic Deans’ Liaisons (ADL) on October
14. The presentation included findings about WTC’s survey of
communications equipment rooms (CERs) on campus, futures in networking
technologies like VoIP, and the relative comparison of the Urbana
campus’s facilities to peer institutions’ facilities.
New core equipment announced
Charley Kline, UIUCnet Architect, announced new network core equipment
publicly at the Fall 2005 CCSP Day on October 25. The RFP process
was completed in October, and pending approval by the Board of Trustees,
the equipment used will be based on the NetIron 40G platform from
Foundry Networks. To view the presentation, go to:

The replacement of the network core is a necessary component of the
upgrade to the campus network. The fact that the network upgrade and
core upgrades will occur simultaneously means that all of UIUCnet
will be upgraded concurrently, from its connections to the Internet
and national research networks to down to individual network jacks.
