Active Directory

The UIUC Active Directory (AD) is a tool used to manage access to certain network resources on campus. AD allows campus administrators to give you access to services (authorize) and allows you to verify your identity (authenticate). You will need to know your Active Directory username and password to access many services across campus, including:

  • CITES NetFiles
  • Engineering WorkStations (EWS)
  • Some CITES Educational Technologies instructional resources

Knowing which username and password to enter can sometimes be confusing. Departmental and Windows-based resources often require your AD username and password, whereas secure University services generally require your NetID. For more information on where you will use your NetID, see the Your Network ID page.
