CITES Survey - 2004 - Undergraduate Student Comments from Support SurveyCITES > news > survey > undergrad student support |
|
What additional communications or computing support would you like to see CITES offer? up to date virus scan A help office on the south quad to help students that have classes there. We're not all engineers. More Linux support. none Personal help Door-service. People who come to your dorm to help you fix problems. no comment I feel there is a problem where students with uiuc.edu addresses are getting unwanted emails that may contain viruses. I would enjoy being informed that this issue is being taken care of. Better ability to block viruses before they reach a user's mailbox. Over the semester, I have recieved over a dozen mail carried viruses. Nothing new. Random- but more features with Cites Express E-mail would be nice. Anything from changing fonts, to auto-completing words, and other good features offered by other e-mail services. I have never been able to connect to the network printer. it would be nice to have a net tech or someone with more computer knowledge to chat with us when we need help. kind of like the ask a librarian feature on www.library.uiuc.edu n/a The express email system is horrible. Why did you all have to get rid of webmail? Nothing was wrong with it. Express is too complicated. more available net techs in the dorms More free software. Perhaps a full version of the Opera Browser, and distribution of Linux/UNIX, like you now do for Windows to CS majors. Express mail flat out sucks. Tear it down and start over again. i am not even aware of the support that they currently offer More software and hardware support. Organizing the service status web pages to be easier to locate and navigate through. Cites has always accomodated me in the best way that they could at the time. It may take awhile to solve a problem, but we get it handled. I have no suggestions other than to have more consultants available - and we all know that it will not happen. A more intelligent and user friendly email system. More wireless access points on campus would be *very* useful. I do not have any suggestions. better email service. Webmail was much better than Express mail. more software for students Help with more software products, for instance Netscape. None house calls, if it's that severe and necessary. Telling students what's wrong. nothing, they rock! i love how i can call and someone always knows whats going on in my computer. wait maybe a few little classes on what all the stuff on your computer is. that would be nice, then i could understand whats going on in my computer. Questions 27 and 33 are worded poorly. CITES is inconpetent and needs major changes! none no comment I do not like CITES I prefer webmail. ON website, easy to find information that is extremely current on the the situation of viruses that are around in the UIUC systems mountable online storage space for every student. There is no reason for anyone on campus to have to cary unrelyable removeable storage around with them. Actually replie to e-mails. quicker esponse to email and web complaints! not the typical support desk procedure. Kicking people with viruses off the network. Making the network faster. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT SPAN AND VIRUS E-MAILS. This problem has gotten exponetially worse in the last year and we are drowning in SPAM and viruses none better net techs in the dorms, those ... are never around and never do anything i dont know Something to lessen the virus e-mails A quicker message when emails come out with Viruses Attached to them and the email are say they are form CITES. I think it is up to CITES to inform us and follow up and try to find the problem and deal with them as need be. Redhat up2date service. more programs that would be free on their free programs list on the website virus software Ability for FULL internet access without a restrictive firewall. Even if we are placed outside the UIUC and do not get a UIUC IP. Speed shaping and rate limiting is very severe and it is very easy to go over the limit within an hour. I would like Wireless internet to be offerred within the dorms or in the lounges in dorms so we can do group meetings and work in the lounges (such as Daniels Hall meeting rooms) I tried to get the ethernet ports working but it did not work. longer hours for the help desk!!! I have recently switched to CITES from WebMail, and I am very displeased with the format and usablity of the site. I continually lose documents, and I do not have the ability to send emails to a large group of people. I'm very, very unhappy with the new email service. i dont know wireless internet Eliminate Banner system. UI Direct much better. I am very happy that CITES offers free virus protection software. They may want to consider offering some sort of Spyware protection as well. It is a big problem on my computer. It would be great if the email system warned you before you went over your quota Perhaps additional communication regarding exactly what software is available to us students for free on the UIUC website. perhaps more software available to students for free, i.e. adobe photoshop or powerpoint user FRIENDLY tools, programs, servers... I would like to see an effective spam email filter. I get, on average, 20-30 emails a day, of which maybe 2 are actual emails. I have talked to my friends, and I am not alone in this. I would like to see more tutorials on how to use various sytems at U of I such as webboard and blackboard. SPAM BLOCKER!!! and the ability to change my address book better! Perhaps a live chat option users can use to talk with experts about problems with their computer and/or internet. computer classes None None, not really familiar with what they do now. telnet (or ssh) access to e-mail The Cites Webpage is not the easiest place to navigate. Sometimes it takes me a while to find a webpage or info. I'm looking for. If there is any way you could change the express email system to make it easier to use that would also me nice...ie when you forward an email it would be nice if you could delete the email addresses from the email you are forwarding. it sucks Better virus control services not sucking at slow email Advertise classes if you have them. Open proxies with extra-network access Bring back WebMail don't know I miss telnet!!! I liked that my email was not web-based. I feel like I have less control of it now... for some strange reason..... More free software. Like Matlab. The service is fine as is. training for webmasters of RSO sites better overall help Answer e-mails promptly better antivirus software... it messed up my computer and my friends so that we couldnt burn CD's or do other things i have to use another Antivirus software The CITES e-mail website has been loading really slow lately. Speed it back up please. I can't think of any The only thing I would really like to see are the computer labs open more hours. I don't know what if anything I would add. My main needs are supplied: NetFiles, email, and broadband internet. I think talking to a real person about computer problems is the most helpful thing for a person who knows only an average amount about computers. ? Not sure. I would to see Microsoft Publisher added More training for students and an easier to navigate website. speed up the time it takes to access email Mail that isn't web based or outlook for the masses. Perhaps then there wouldn't be so many virus downloads. Not Sure I would like to see Cites ExpressMail return to the speed that it exhibited at the beginning of the school year. Since the beginning of this semester, it was become much more slow, and it has become almost unusable since spring break. None Larger inbox size. Newsgroups! uh, none that I can think of. have the computer labs be open much more faster website display, sometimes it is really really slow i am very frustrated that because of restrictions set on my email account i am unable to send out mass emails to everyone in my fraternity. i am an officer in my house and often have to send out emails to the entire house (about 130 people) and cites does not let me send it because there are 'too many recipients.' i would like to see this changed. virus protection within the system-the viruses should be blocked out by cites. Keep this [removed] up and running n/a I would like to have the option of checking email through a text-based system like we used to have (Pine) rather than always having to use the web browser I appreciate the walk-in support, and wish it might stay. No charge for house calls if need computer help none CITES and URH need to add Mostly Open and Completely Open campus firewall options for URHnet clients. Many users have their own firewalls, so the campus firewall merely restricts their network usage. change the email back to webmail or make the FONT bigger on express, webmail looked so much nicer and neater, and the new messages were at the top not the bottom (very annoying) live online support like chat the server has been very slow lately and takes forever to check my email. jelly toast Faster connection speeds Implement a more reliable network! I would like to see more wireless access points on campus -- most specifically in the dorms. Its too Slow! How to save things to disks/cds in different formats; how to clean your computer hard drive; how to set up internet services none to add Express Cites e-mail cluster is horrible. Webmail was much better and I'm angry I had to switch Some teaching guide on how to use new popular software. List of viruses on their website. Quick, up to date warnings of viruses, even through massmail. the option to change our email address should the need arise I would love to see the wireless network expanded. It is incredibly helpful. It would be quite nice to have the wireless network expanded to cover more outdoor locations too - most notably the quad. Thanks! -Telnet/SSH option for CITES Express -Mail forwarding for Grads (most likely to UIAlumni Accounts) more support I would like to be notified sooner if my emails are about to exceed the quota. Because sometimes I can't check my email and I don't know why I think that they need to be able to asist you with problems quicker. They are very slow when it comes to help. It was a pain to switch over from webmail to cites express mail. Nothing was explained on HOW to switch or all the things you had to do to make sure your account successfully switched. Please don't do it again. Larger email size, fewer passwords, faster email service, email service that can be accessed easilly through outlook express, allow more than 20 entries on one email page alternative virus protection software Not sure. I think most of my needs are met. I don't know. none n/a Improved campus-wide wireless network access points. Help for Macintosh KILL EXPRESS MAIL no comment Faster internet links to other computer support programs Expanded wireless Ethernet availability Nothing at the moment. Online chat help has proven to be useful to me in the past, but I don't know that CITES needs to offer it. faster Cites Express email. the changed in the email system after spring break is incredibly slow. Free printing Don't have any It would be nice to know more about all of the services and uses CITES provides for students. More advanced notices of changes. more software available Love Netfiles. I would like to have the ablility to find out what software is availbale at each lab (ie I am looking for 'EndNote' and I have contacted cites, who told me to ask a librarian- it was a useless reply and I am still looking!) It is ridiculous the number of different sites and the number of different passwords a student must remember. Why can't they have the same password for everything? Have people come over and fix my computer!! Talking it out to me doesn't do me any good when I can't cleary describe the problems my computer has. a computer repair shop, perhaps for a small fee HELP WITH THE IDIOTIC VPN...CLEARER DOWLOADING/INSTALLATION DIRECTIONS! MORE COMPATIBILITY WITH WIDER VARIETY OF HOME COMPUTER SETUP! Stopping all files with the virus attachments from flooding the UIUC network. can't think of anything info on viruses and exactly what to do if you get one Possibly online help, frequently asked questions page. Filters for our email accounts that will ONLY filter junk mail/SPAM. none real space for a web site, possibly supporting SSI, CGI and/or PHP... not this NetFiles junk also would like to have had newsgroups remain, but no longer an issue (thanks to Tim Skirvin for all his hard work on news.ks.uiuc.edu) I hate that when I switched from Webmail to CitesExpress that I had to change passwords. I had the same damn password for 3 1/2 years and all of a sudden I had to come up with some new cockamamey password. That's just stupid. Bring Webmail back! this express mail feature is garbage. Continued shell account access. None Add more Wireless acces points and better coverage More updated Mac services. At the least a link to the Mac user group on campus would be helpful. I only found out about in my senior year. chat features for help BETTER VIRUS COVER Complete Wireless Network Access that is easily available to all students. The web site is too cluttered. It is very hard to find what I am looking for usually. The explanations need to be a little less verbose. Are we allowed to make our own website? That would be a nice feature. More easy-to-find and informative network usage metrics. linix and unix classes - more reliable and faster email service - more computers in popular areas - don't allow classes to reserve public labs (Everitt) More virus control/ virus protection. Higher quality products. C'mon guys, be more professional with your services. The cites express web interface is unbearable slow. Making it much faster would be a great improvement ability to change the status of emails to urgent. it doesnt really help when the customer support is web-based when you have trouble on the web... Online Knowledge Base maybe some info nights on say setting up a digital camera with your computer or learning how to use programs better Webmail again. Publish something for new students that offers a comprehensive overview of computing resources (work with other groups that offer computing resources). It shouldn't take an engineering student three years to figure out that they have file space on the network. It would be nice to see some clarifications as to which department handles what. I work for the CSIL labs, and we constantly get questions about CITES stuff and so on. Also, WHAT IS THE DEAL with the fifteen million passwords on this campus?! I thought we were running Kerb for a reason--why is it that we only seem to use Kerb passwords to authenticate in and change other passwords? If it's for security reasons, why not just enforce password rotations every now and again? All that happens is that people lose their passwords too much, so they end up using a really easy one for everything. spam protection for their email accounts. Please, for the love of god, add a spam filter to CITES Express Email. I've lost countless hours to deleting the spam that I get every day; meanwhile, at each and every other mail account I have (including those that I'm not paying for) I actually recieve approximately .1% of the spam sent to me, because they have filters. Can you lengthen the service hours at the ICS labs? Nothing else. The network is always laggy or going down for several hours. Less ... passwords. - Not Sure...maybe genereal computer help. there should be help provided for students with computer problems. The website for the Micro-Order Center should have a better setup. BOO to you all for discontinuing newsgroups and SSH support! BOOOOOOO BOOOOOO BOOOOOO BOOOOOOO BOOOOOO BOOOOOO BOOOOOOO BOOOOOO BOOOOOO Faster internet, it has been very slow recently. more extensive hardware support and cheaper software for students tutorials on using Unix and important applications within Unix None A link to virus information on the main page would be very helpful. I thought the help that Cites offered was very good. They were courteous and helpful. I was dissappointed in the cost for students. It is very expensive and can be difficult for college students to pay for. Help through the phone is too difficult and I have found the internet assistance to be extremely confusing. In particular, the changing to cites express email does not look like an easy task and the whole the thing is very unclear. I would like to change my email over from webmail but i am nervous about losing emails and the whol process is very muddy. Updates on viruses thru e-mails clearer instructions on how to make a webpage offer more dot printers for housing How do I get virus protection and updates for Millenium Edition!!!! More free software Its hard to find things at the webstore. n/a real-time chat CITES Express mail sucks .... It's unhelpful and hard to personalize. It also opens included pictures without asking and with all the spam mail that I get, it's not a pretty or appreciate sight. The new system for registering this fall is also horrendous, but I'm not sure this is as much your fault as it is UIntegrate's fault. I have found CITES to be less helpful to my everyday life over the course of the past year than I've ever found computing at the UofI to be. I understand the need for new technology, to update email services, registration services, etc., but I have been rather frustrated with the manner with which it has been handled. Also, while I appreciate the guidelines for secure passwords, being told when to change mine (and oh, the many that there are!), being forced to create new IDs and new passwords for every new service I am told to use... it's all ridiculous. I appreciate the suggestions for password protection, but I feel capable of deciding upon something appropriate without the rules. If someone really wishes to have a password of firstname_lastname, by all means, warn them, but allow them. they'll learn. the past year dealing with CITES has created enough ridiculous annoyance that I am quite ready to be finished with it. none Please add any additional comments—suggestions, complaints, etc.—regarding this survey or about CITES Help Desk Support. no comment express email sucks, and gives me many problems!! make express more user friendly Please provide faster internet My computer was shut off because my roommate accidently opened an attachment with a virus. I didn't find out until later that evening because I was sent the information in an *e-mail*. Rather hard for me to check my e-mail when my internet has been turned off. It should be easier to locate login pages for Compass, Blackboard, WebCT, etc. Currently, the easiest way to find those login pages is to use the EWS website. I still haven't managed to figure out how to login from just a webpage located through the CITES page. More warnings about network slowdowns. n/a The express email system is horrible. Why did you all have to get rid of webmail? Nothing was wrong with it. Express is too complicated. i don't know if it relates to this survey, but the new email on express mail is horrible and i wish that we could go back to using webmail or something more like it. it was so much easier to use. The net techs were always very helpful when our internet got shut off because of viruses. We were unaware that the reason for our internet being shut off was that we had a virus: I think that you should make it more well-known around move-in time (especially for new students) the dangers of viruses and that your internet will be shut off if you get a virus. Cites does a great job - as well as possible in my opinion. Make sure the employees are friendly and approachable! I didn't know it existed or what it is. Reevaluate your decisions on the design and functionality of Express mail. Many features are counterintuitive, perhaps you should consider contacting a Human Factors rep. instead of obviously placing the creative design aspect of the program on the shoulders of ill-equiped engineers. No comments. It is great to be able to send email and/or phone up and get help. I have taken advantage of your help and found it useful. None I have contacted the CITES Help Desk several times and never gotten any response whatsoever. One time I called and got a message saying they were closed, when I was calling right in the middle of their open hours that they listed. Also, express email sucks ..., bring back webmail! once i used a friends cites express email and somehow my name and password were saved there and i couldn't unsave it. it would be nice to be able to undo that. I can't even count how many emails I have received this year with attachments from people that I don't know with uiuc.edu names and probably contain viruses. There needs to be better security in your email system advertise that CITES is available and what it is, i had no idea this existed until a class had a website on it Your people are useless. The 2-3 times that I have called you with a problem, they have told me that I was wrong. In actuality, there was a problem, yet your CITES employees wouldn't get off their lazy butts to do something about it. I've also applied to be a Net-tech when needed, and the University wouldn't contact me back, even though at the beginning of this year, you were in dire need of Net-techs. I believe CITES needs to employ people who care about the students, not about their wallets. I wish they hadn't made me switch to CITES. I am getting spammed with viruses and it bogs to the point of not letting me on about three times a week. I am graduating in May and my e-mail account got switched to the new express.cites.edu and I absolutely HATE it. It is confusing and cheap. I do not understand why you switched the seniors over so late in the semester. whoever works the phones is very helpful and patient. The servers need to be upgraded, the bandwidth limited needs to be increased if not eliminated and the CITES staff needs to be better education. I suggest hiring only seniors in CS to work for CITES! na From a user standpoint, Webmail was a far superior email service to express mail. At least with Webmail you had personal options, and your emails were easier to navigate since the new messages were in bold and at the top of the screen. I'm not impressed with Express mail. no comment I don't know if the area of Net Techs fall under you, but the Net Techs are hard to reach and make contact with. Perhaps a better system of making contact with them would be more productive. Possibly a sign-up log for appointment times in the various computer labs. I do not like CITES I prefer webmail. This survey was pretty vague. For example, when you ask me what I believe my knowledge of the computing and communications services with respect to the different campus organizations... I'm pretty sure I know the difference, but just because I belive I know what's going on doesn't mean I know what I'm talking about. Also, will I use an online help tool? Well, if it's designed well and it gives me answers to my questions, of course I'll use it. And, to ask me about CITES website and if I use the category or audience navigational links... I ONLY know what those are because I know a little about computer interface design. I guarentee none of my friends know what that is, because I tried talking about that with them when the university page changed it's navigation style. Both express mail and Netfiles are slow and have poorly designed interfaces. Netfiles is very limiting in that it dosn't function well outside of web access. This would not be quite so irritating if the web interface wasn't laggy. Computer networking one mile away need not be slow, It would be understandable if I were in another country. CITES needs to use their resources to improve their connections, not to babysit simple computer problems. If it would free up scarce resources to be put back into hardware and better connections, an automated customer support tool would be very usefull. is there any way to protect us from viruses? it seems like we were all diconnected a lot a few months ago. Rate Limiting is too little. I know a lot of people who would like to see it increased. Even if you could increase it to 850MB and 750MB for an A rating. I'd like to see it go altogether, but I understand that it cannot. I'd prefer better rates. An alternative might be to offer more bandwidth for an additional fee. See previous about junk mail none Right now I am very frustrated with CITES because my room was shutdown for no reason and we still havent been notified as to why. We have tried to contact the help desk but after 4 days have gotten no response. Whatever - we got a cord running from the room next door. Screw you guys. I use the Solaris superglue update service all the time, please continue to offer it. Cites can be slow sometimes. I am not sure if you govern over the Netechs, but I think you do. I think you need better hiring pracitices or more regulations as far as them doing their job. I personally find them to be often incompetent in subjects about computers, specifically networking equipment and possible problems with it. They also were very unhelpful when the internet was shut off at the beginning of first semester, my roomate and myself run linux, I run xp as well but i was already patched with the patches provided from the nettechs, and this was on the first day back. Yet it still took 5 days for a net tech to get to our room and call in for us to be activated only because we walked every floor of the building in search of him and coerced him into coming to activate us. Even when there were 2 netechs in the computer lab, neither one would come up to help, even though they both were not helping any students at the moment. My only other complaint is about your method of shutting off the internet to a room not due to viruses but due to bandwidth abuse or something of that sort, i think you should consider that everyone here most likely has a roomate who did nothing wrong, and you should limit the rooms in that case to only inter-network websites, almost all uiuc homework is online and not having that connection cripples you if your normal routine is doing homework in your room with all your resources on your own computer. You guys really are good about helping with questions. Whenever I've contacted you, you've called back, given help, and I've done what you've said all in less than three or four days. For how busy things get, I'm impressed with your promptness; don't ever change that! My express mail account has be bombarded with viruses and junk mail some of which come directly from other UIUC accounts. You either need to find away to eliminate these annoyances or restrict them. Also, a 'filter' button would be useful in the email service rather than having to go through the whole filtering process you have right now. Why couldn't the university wait another year for the webmail users to cycle out of the system? Seems like it was just to make things difficult. I recieved spam the second day I had express mail. I am having all kinds of problems with larger emails but I have deleted all files in my account including the deleted files. Webmail never gave me this problem. An error ALWAY pops up when I try to back out of something in express mail. Whether i check yes or no, it still does not fix anything. I think express mail is a horrible mistake! longer hours for the help desk!!! none More competent employees at the CITES lab such as in the Union and in the undergrad library. I had one CITES employee that was clueless to how to connect a keyboard to the PC. The new Express mail interface is confusing, filled with glitches and overall poor in quality. The recent switch from Webmail to the express mail interface was a poor decision. stop sending mailbox full messages everyhour for days on end, it doesnt help my mailbox get empty No more Banner. This week, I have been very unhappy with the net techs...the Internet connection in our room has been shut off for a week now because I had a virus. I understand wanting to seal off such a problem but I have fixed the virus and we still are without vital connection that we need for classes, online work, etc. We have contacted the net techs several times (who don't always come to their hours in the labs) and we have still not heard anything. This is frustrating! Other than this current issue, I have not had any other problems with cites services. webmail was better. express mail is even worse than webmail. try making it more user friendly. Make the website easier to navigate. It is very jumbled and hard to find things from the first page. The search function is helpful but it would be nice to have a clearer main web page. my email filled up twice this year which would not allow me to get any emails, this resulted in me missing all the residence hall announcements and missing my opportunity to live in university housing...i would have liked to talk to somebody about the the problem, rather than a machine get back to people sooner! I had a virus on my computer for two months before you people got back to me!!! I emailed and called numerous times and you were rude and didn't call back. I finally got a person in my dorm to fix it. I am not satisfied with the express cites system. Webmail worked very well for me and I had no complaints. Now my box gets full quickly, it is very slow at times, and the most recent maiol being being on the bottom makes it very confusing. I also can no longer retrieve messages that I may have accidentally deleted. None I did not like having to change to express mail when I am graduating in a few months. Express mail is horrible. The most recent e-mails don't pop up first no matter if you have it set to sort by date. I have not met a single person who thinks this is an effective e-mail service. You would think a school this strong in computer science would have a state-of-the art e-mail service. no none stop getting the system gunked up Not familiar enough with CITES to take a survey on it. Good Job =) It took maybe 3 minutes! After I clean my email box, there are still several days that I cannot receive any letter, except your letter that 'mail box full'. So I feel the system is really bother me. Please bring back WebMail, because Express Mail is the worst emailing system I have ever used. I get far too many emails telling me that I do not have any memory left for my email. There is no reason I should get 10 emails a day. Why is this mandatory? get more net techs so computers can be fixed (back on then internet) the same day. I think I would rather talk to someone whether in person or on the phone than use the web for help. ability to have more mail messages I don't even know what's wrong with my e-mail. I have none. none There are too many passwords to remember for the UofI email, netid, student accounts, active directory, ews. Its crazy make it all the same. Is not less secure. Also, its unacceptable that when I send email to a fellow student containing NONVIRUS attachments (IE images) that it never gets to him/her and I have to find other means of transfer. I am very glad that CITES has so many labs where students can have group project meetings and in case students have to print something and they don't have a printer or if they don't have any internet capabilities, they know that there is someplace to go. Also, CITES is very helpful when you need help or have a problem of any sort. THANK YOU At the UIUC website, the search tool makes it difficult to get into certain programs because when you search, a whole bunch of other websites pop up and dont provide direct links to the program im looking for on help pages. Or maybe they are just difficult to find. i had a problem with my account, emailed cites, got no reply and tried to call. i was hung up on after being on hold and again emailed cites. they never emailed my back with help but the problem did go away. You need to be faster. There have been some major problems this year. I was one of the first people on campus an I was the last one on my floor to have my connection repaired at the beginning of the year Answer questions concisely antivirus software is not so great i got a virus, a bad one Rate limiting system needs some work - computers outside of UIUC but on the McLeod network have unlimited bandwidth to campus, but URH computers don't have unlimited bandwidth out to McCleod users. I just want to complain about how awful the spell check is on cites. It cites as incorrect very basic but commonly misspelled words, creating more work than not having it all. I would also like to complain about the address book in cites. It now takes about 5 steps to use the feature when it used to take 2. I am also unhappy that when one hits reply that the message from the sender is lost. I can't think of any I am unclear about item #30. My computer is connected to the dormitory EtherNet at Hendrick House, but is not owned by UIUC or 'ghosted' like the lab computers. I wasn't sure if I was being asked whether I used computers completely separate from the university, or whether my own computer would count as 'not attached' despite being connected in a university-affiliated building. Also, there were not enough options on #29 and #30 to reflect my high level of computer use. I really like being able to download the free virus software off of the website. It's very resourceful. The problem with the 'port' that is used to access the express mail accounts is very hard to solve from certain connections. I connect in a university network in Germany (where I am studying abroad) and cannot access my e-mail through that connection. On other connections it works fine and I must say express is a major improvement from webmail. Although I've sent a few emails to various people at CITES, I never get a response. For example, I emailed the necessary person regarding a bug in this survey which didn't let me complete it, and although they evidently fixed the bug, they never bothered to tell me about it. In general, response to emails has been quite poor. I don't like the change of email service. I prefer to use telnet over a web-based email program. The lack of a telnet/ssh option bothers me. This survey seemed very one-dimensional. why the hell is cites express email sooooooo slow.......it is getting to the point of absolute insanity. Express mail is VERY SLOW during the day -- so slow it affects my work efficiency greatly faster response to problems Please bring back SSH for e-mail...web interface can be EXTREEMELY slow at times! None The express email is way too slow. I would like to see the Express E-Mail load faster, but this is most likely my connection. Webboard is terrible Why is it always so slow? it takes like twenty seconds to log in and get to my inbox. Is the network just overloaded? if so, you should get more bandwidth or whatever becuase I'm tired of waiting around for my email to load. Lately the email has been going incredibly slow. All other internet connections are fine, but both at home and at school, it takes forever to open the program, send, read etc. the labs are not open enough CITES should advertise more about what it offers. I'm still not exactly sure what servies are provided by CITES and what are are not. Keep this [removed] up and running. n/a CITES email service is very slow and reliable, and if I were to give it a grade it would be an F- The email has been real slow lately Because of efforts to stop the prescription emails, an email list i am on no longer gets emails to me, and i am missing alot of important emails. if you could please allow any emails to [email removed] to come to my email, that would help me a whole lot, because i REALLY need those emails. It was not very cool to have to switch over my webmail account with 3 months until graduation. I'm sorry that you are to lazy to phase things out as the people who used webmail were going to graduate. Also I'm disappointed with you changing the interface on express mail almost every other week. Once I get used to the interface, you go and change it again. Thanks for making me do more work than I have to just to Log Out. none why is the email going so freakin slow? Its making me mad Lately CITES email services has been running very slow. I do not think it is my internet connection and feel it has to do with an overload of the server. Please try to fix this, it is very frusterating! Regarding the email system in general, I would like to see the written email that I am replying to when I reply to it, like with WebMail. Also, the system is very slow. The website is too often slow and or even down. Need a more reliable site. Please fix the webmail...it takes forever to open....i do mean FOREVER and then it doesn't always work right. the email system has been agonizingly slow lately-i'm not sure if its because everyone has switched over to express now or what, but it takes FOREVER and i'm hoping its a problem that will be fixed soon A web-based customer support tool would be nice, but it is always better to be able to talk to an actual person about a computer problem because they can often poinpoint what exactly the problem with the computer is, whereas my experience with web-based customer support for things has proven to be completely unhelpful simpatico sickie cites is so freakin slow, speed it up Too many virus ar eput into my account, it is not to secure Fix the Cites Express Email, my account is running slow it takes me forever to check my mail. Cites Express Mail is very, very slow a lot of the time and it is extremely annoying when it takes 5 minutes to open a single e-mail. this is unrelated but i'm not a fan of the new express mail...i liked the old cluster account better I have found the quality of your network here to be ridiculously unreliable and inconsistent. Furthermore, I have found it difficult to find what I'm looking for on your website. Its too Slow! I've had plenty of computer problems in the past, and it never phases me to get help from CITES. I always contact family members or friends studying a field in computers for assistance with my computer problems. I think CITES needs to make itself more aware to students. cites express email sucks, get the regular old webmail back, that interface is so much better. More memory allowance for email; the cites express email does not offer very good features; Also, there should be a spam filter and a virus scan. It's very frustrating to get so many viruses and junk emails. I'm not happy with this system at all. There are problems daily. For example, I can't sort my email the way I want (newest to oldest). And now it takes FOREVER to do anything with email. express email is painfully slow sometimes none to add Cites has done a great job except for in one area- e-mail. Cites is constantly changing the rules, and does not provide quick, easy service to changing. When I changed, it told me I had the wrong password, and took me about 45 minutes rather than a quick 5. Nothing too bad, just inconvenient. none I recently looked up on the CITES website how to make a web page, and I couldn't find how to do it. The site is kind of confusing and I usually can't find what I'm looking for. Can you please set up better filters for the email. My email account was inactive for a year and a half because I w/drew. I never gave it out when filling info on the Web. I still receive almost one hundred spam mails a day. I have tried using the filter page to block them out but it works almost not at all. It is very annoying. Perhaps you could change the way you add filters to emails or use/offer spam blockers. Thank You. I think that the net techs that are sent to the dorms are for the most part undereducated in what they are doing. Their inexpierence sent my computer into a meltdown and I ended up buying a whole new system. The bandwidth limit is absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes we want to watch streaming video or radio and we can't even do this because we will go over our bandwidth. I am extremely happy that I am moving off campus next year so I don't have to deal with this garbage. I have gone over the limit at least 7 times this year without even realizing it. I don't download much, it is just streaming videos or radio. Not to mention uploading pictures online will jack up your bandwidth usage. Useless. Thanks for giving the opportunity for feedback. I have no idea who to call with problems, seeing how nothing is listed or easy to find. Add some tech support people who know computers and dont just follow some problem solving script. Stop forcing unneccessary surveys on us, may cause some bitterness. Allow us to use our own antivirus programs instead of forcing yours on our computers Don't have any. Better inform staff about what programs and software are available to students. I tried to check out Pro-E and the lady at the desk didn't know if undergrads were allowed to have it. Haven't checked back yet. none Each time I try to check my mail, it sometimes doesn't load. This is getting extremely slow. I wish the students cluster wasn't being retired. I'm going to miss it a lot. n/a Switching from webmail to express mail totally sucks. Express is super slow and often doesn't work. It is way more complex than webmail and the switch was a worthless pain in the .... Cites rules, regulations, and services should be more publicized so students are more aware and informed. Help for Macintosh The new email service has some problems. It goes much slower than Webmail did. There are many instances where the dialup service will not communicate for minutes at a time. KILL EXPRESS MAIL i hate it and i'm ... i couldn't just chill with webmail for another year Cites service has been laggy and email has been down for unexplained reasons Webmail was much much better for email. you guys should have timed the webmail switch better. If you are fasing it out then why not wait the one year to phase . the support for webmail is not that big of a deal. You are FAILING at stopping spam. I never ever use uiuc email for unsecure email yet some how it seems you have some spy ware on the servers. when someone checks something out, and turns it back in, be sure to mark that it was turned back in, so i dont get a phone call 2 weeks later saying that i never turned it back in, and another call 2 days after that as well. no comment The VPN (audio reserves) could be more user friendly. Wouldn't mind a more intuitive CITES Web site design - some of the stuff in there hasn't been updated in ages, and it's hard to get to Lately Cites Express email has been very slow. Recently I have noticed a major slowing up of email, retrieving and opening and switching between folders. Hopefully you can get that fixed soon. None I have spoken with 2 guys that were very friendly and personable on the phone, and another one that was not as personable. He was however very knowledgable, but I felt that he cared less about my call then the other 2 that I had previously spoken with. Perhaps more experienced Cites staff members. The new Cites express email sucks. The fact that the number of emails I can send is rediculous. Many people on this campus have to send mass emails for many different reasons ranging from organizations to jobs. better filters for e-mail accounts. Such as can block users by clicking on their names or in a box near their names. The word filters are not enough and the only 'address book' function is too restrictive I hate cites express...i want webmail back Keep the Nettechs...they are gold. Thank you for Netfiles. Why didn't I learn about it before? It's not promoted very much. NetFiles is one of CITES greatest achievements. Well done. I would like to have the ablility to find out what software is availbale at each lab (ie I am looking for 'EndNote' and I have contacted cites, who told me to ask a librarian- it was a useless reply and I am still looking!) I have no idea what CCS is earlier in this survey. Maybe you could explain it since not everyone knows. Also, why can't you personalize your email preference. I tried to change it back since you people messed with express cites, now my new emails are at the very end and it won't stay changed once I change it. THESE ACTIONS SHOULD BE OBVIOUS!! They are not. need more printers The VPN used to access music from the Music School website is a nightmare. It takes up too much room and was not compatible with my computer or internet access setup(so CITES help eventuallyinformed me--after a week). No solution was offered. Also, there have been numerous problems in my ATMOS 120 class(which uses Illinois Compass). I have had to go out of my way to dowload several things for this class, including the Netscape Browser, which I HATE and also came with a PARASITE! Also, it had so many problems grading the online homework (none of which were rectified by CITES personell) that we are back to using paper homework which is much more inconvenient. I've had to have my boyfriend (who is NOT a student but is better with computers that I) help me figure out/download several things when I've had problems using these websites. This is a great frusteration and gross waste of time for both he and I. My ATMOS 120 class was also informed by the professor that your communication was slow and inconclusive, so this brought additional problems to us(hence the paper homework). Keep in mind, even if we have 'problems' online this is still a college class and the expectations are not lowered, nor is the class allowed to drop in pace. In my mind, CITES is synonymous with HEADACHE. The new Cites system is a little buggy compared to webmail: After a month my email has been flooded with email contianing a unknown exe and there is no whay to block the sending of these 3 word emails. I suggest screening all email addresses for contaimination. The first email was actually from from a mass mail from my major. can't think of anything The cites webmail has been acting up lately with it being extremely slow and occassionally not being able to delete emails.(this is about the cites webmail in general) The new email system is far slower and more problematic than the old. the express email system does not go to the end of new emails and many times cuts off the list to not display all unread emails. It is a major discredit to the University that in an effort to consolidate and make all things available to the novice, the students and staff clusters along with all shell email access will be destroyed. I am glad I am graduating this May so I do not have to spend hours waiting for some unreliable web interface struggle to update itself and stay consistent. This is a big step in the wrong direction made, in my opinion, by fully incompetent and uneducated individuals. I was notified that once my email was switched over to CITES, I would have plenty more space in my folder for email storage. However, I seem to have less than half the space in my Inbox than I had with the old Webmail system. I find this very inconvenienet and would like this problem addressed. Thank you. Well, I wish the labs could be open for more hours so that I don't always have to go back home to access the Internet. Add more wireless acces points and better coverage. Have it where we can have access outside. I'm becoming a big fan of netfiles! Although I only heard about it's introduction because of a friend, a little more attention on the cites website might have been nice to clue us in. HAD TO WAIT A WEEK TO GET INTERNET RUNNING TWICE WHEN THINGS GAVE GONE WRONG - THATS TOO LONG WHEN HAVE WORK TO BE DONE - filter out more spam - better security of email addresses on ph (directory lookup) since many spam companies are getting emails that way - more reliable and stable email servers I find the people at DCL extremely competent and helpful your web site has so many options it gets confusing Express mail is *awful*. The interface is non-intuitive, clunky and above all else, slow. Moving to this system was a mistake. I didn't want to be switched over to CITES. Webmail was just fine for me. Why do I get a pop-up when I open my CITES email page? Even if I'm using Win 98? this past week the cites service to the express mail had become increasingly SLOW!!!!, slower than my dial up at home Express mail STINKS... webmail was much better and easier to use. U of I direct is also a very simple program and should not be abandoned I've always thought the goal of doing anything with computers was to get the computer to bend to your will, not force you to do what it wants. It seems like some of CITES policies aren't nesicarily in the best interest of anyone except for CITES making other's lives more difficult. Other then policy complaints I've been overall fairly happy with CITES. You guys do a pretty good job. i hate express email through cites, webmail was so much easier to use and way better. This survey is both too long and does not contain areas for feedback about the issues that concern me (e.g. 'How do you feel about having an inferior, web-based e-mail application foisted upon you;' 'Should CITES implement a spam filter like every other e-mail service in the industrial world;' etc.) It's sometimes hard to get help, because most cites stuff seems to be on the internet...which I can't typically use if I'm looking for help. i really dont know much about sites, i dont think that many students do, it would be nice to know what you guys are all about, but i am not sure through what medium this would be achieved best since students usually delete emails that arent of critical importance The Cites Express mail is absolutely horrible. The interface is so much worse than webmail. None. Fix the fricken internet i pay way too much for service poorer than aol!!! I was recently forced to switch to cites express email. I'm definitely not impressed and wish telnet were still available. I have only heard bad things about the CITES helpers, including workers who caused more problems on a machine and still had to get paid, workers who stood around and talked then got paid for it, and workers who would not listen to a problem when people had some computer knowledge of their own. when i came to the dorm for the first time it took forever for the cites person from the lab to fix up my internet and when i called up cites he did it immediately even though the day b4 that he said it would take 2 weeks! Less ... passwords. A better trained helpdesk staff that knows when something is over their head and doesn't try to give canned answers to more difficult problems. I am in love with the man that helped me when I got a virus! - Since CITES has taken over my email, it is one of the slowest and most reliable websites i access. i am disappointed completely in the requirement to switch from webmail. express email is horrible, please get rid of it. On the email accounts, the new mail should be at the top of the list of email in the inbox. the new cites email (switched from webmail) is confusing and inconvenient. i would have much rather been able to keep my old account until i leave in may. They never answer emails I was the person that originally reported the dropped-connection problem with the campus firewalls back in December. I like how I was totally ignored until several more people finally reported the same problem. Then CITES never updated me with what was going on, and never posted the problem on status.cites.uiuc.edu. The only way I eventually figured out what was going on is I also filed a complaint with Housing Technology and they told me what the problem was once they figured it out. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO The Express Mail became extremely slow. SPAM BLOCKER I like being able to call and talk to a person b/c I'm not terribly good at navigating 'help' cites b/c I don't always know the proper terminology or exactly what I am looking for. The internet does not always perform well, it is slow much of the time. Perhaps an upgrade/change of ISP is needed. Change the ftp program so that it allows people to add more than one file at a time and folders. I don't know if you have anything to do with the faulty internet service as of late, but operations timing out on a consistent basis are annoying. None new CITES emial can't telnet This is really about the CITES help desk support but rather the reliability and speed. My email gets filled with junk/spam mail everyday from places I've never even been to. I would like to have a block sender or spam filter on our email to prevent this. Also, I sometimes cannot access my email for certain reasons or it is really slow. The help information is rather confusing. Also very extensive and hard to follow at times. (filtering email) I was pleased to find that the switch over to CITES from Webmail was rather easy for me personally. a lot of the information and procedures described on the CITES website are unclear and hard to understand Hi. My name is ... and I live in.... My telephone number is .... Funny enough, when people use campus phones to dial 244-7000, the CITES number, they get my room instead. If you have any ideas on how to fix that, please email me at [email removed] i think they should add some more techincal programs. I really enjoy using programs such as Pro/Engineer, but would like it if there were more useful programs that could be downloaded/installed for free.
