CITES Survey - 2004 - Undergraduate Student Comments from Services Survey

CITES > news > survey > undergrad student services

What additional communications or computing support would you like to see CITES offer?

I would like to see Cites allow people to email more than 100 people at a time. As a club officer it is difficult to send out many e-mails to people in the group, escpecially after the Webmail/ Cites switch. So far I have been very dissappointed with the features on Cites Express Mail. mainly it is difficult to import lists of emails from word or excel. Please get this fixed because I know I am not the only person affected by this new inferior express mail system. I have contacted Cites help line several times and every time they have told me that they do not know how to solve my problem and that they are still in the beginning stages of the program. I hate being used as a guinea pig. the university should give students an e-mail program that they know everything about. Thank you and have a good day.

stopping viruses that are being passed about over the university network through cites emails

Make changes simpler.  Make explainations simpler.

None.

??

Email is NOT quick and not reliable!

spam blocker.

Wireless network throughout entire campus.  University of Miami in Florida has this system.

support for netscape messenger.  free virus software

So far I am satisfied with cites. Although sometimes it takes a while for it to come up.

Net techs or any kind of help, needs to be more accessible.

Wireless internet in classrooms.

USENET, SSH

Better support for linux/unix users

More wireless locations, Better support staff or online resources to support (going to talk to people and having them print out something for you is a huge waste of time), and GET RID OF OR AT LEAST FIX WEBCT BECAUSE IT SUCKS (you can't just right-click and download files, you have to open them in the stupid browser and copy them which is really annoying when I just want a copy of the lecture notes)

more space on netfiles for personal use

Newer and faster computers in some of the computer labs around campus.

Not sure

larger web space for students

UNIVERSITY WIDE WIRELESS

Actual support.

More walk-up computing cites, more buildings that allows wireless connections

It would be very hard to solve my own problems (Q51).  It is always hard to fix computer related problem with just visual instructions.

HP certification

Stop screwing up everyone's internet capabilities.  Find a better way to manage viruses on campus.  I have to deal with to many problems of student's internet being shut off becasue you guys did not find 1) a good way to warn or protect against the virus and 2) shut off their internet caoabilities with out giving them the chance to download any of the necessary cleaners or anti-virus software to help out their computer.  You just shut things down and cause more problems than you solve.

no bandwidth quota!

everything is a ok

none

more free software

better virus alerts

Please, please, please, bring back something like cluster.  I cannot stand using expressmail.  I love sshing, I can do it from anywhere, and it's faster than expressmail. Pine is also more powerful and easier to use.

free long-distance calls

I don't know.

virtual directions of how to do certian tasks... such as setting up a anti-virus program.

keep the cluster accounts

don't know

More storage space.

I would like to see the entire campus covered in wireless access. Its nice that the engineering quad mostly is, but the actual quad would be really nice.

more cites labs at the undergraduate library

Better connections between blackboard/compass to email.  Eventually make email, compass, gradebook, registering one thing.

continue maintaining the cites labs across campus as is.

in general, there needs to be more connectivity with mac osx. using the university wireless networks with a mac is complicated and sometimes just doesn't work.

Quit changing all the university used programsa at once-- it doesn't make any sense to change the registration method at the same time as EVERYTHING ELSE... and you people wonder

why we're calling CITES all the time to come fix our computers.

More wireless access locations--Illini Union, for example

im good

More locations where Wi-Fi networks are availible

Wider avalability of wirless internet in and around the quad.

Better communication between CITES administration and housing division.  Thoroughly evaluated disabling bots - that is CITES should thoroughly test their programs that shut off

Residence Hall users for viruses and other malicious computer problems.

personalization to email service

wireless network around campus

don't know

More walk-in sites than just DCL to fix problems, possibly somewhere on the main campus.

hmm, i would like to know how to connect the wirelss LAN sevice.

Wireless Internet access across campus

not sure

none

More walk up connection and wireless support throughout the campus.

more options in email such as font face, font color, etc.

Don't get rid of the students cluster!

wirelss on campus

screen tbe multiple emails received re: male enhancement products

Bring back the newsgroups. Also, a way to check e-mail w/o using a web-based interface. ie The way you could ssh into students.

I'm satisfied with CITES, I can't think of anything off-hand that needs to be improved

there's practically no place to connect my laptop to the internet.

get what you have so far together.

i hate the express email design. You have to flip through the old mail that you need to keep in order to see the new. The font is small as well.

More (and stronger) wireless connections and more functioning walk-ups.

Make more of campus and more buildings wireless.  We use Grainger's all the time and thats awesome but more of campus should offer wireless internet access.

None

none

easier accessabilty, quicker response time

Some sort of spam/virii mail filtering.

campus wide wireless internet access, or at least wireless on the quad

More computer stations on campus. Email can get very jammed at certain times of day and it CITES is very slow at opening my account or sometimes it doesn't even go through.

Better filtering of junk mail

E-mail directory; I know there is a search feature on the UIUC website, but an e-mail directory would be more helpful, especially if you're unsure of a person's first name.  The search

feature doesn't work very well if you don't know the person's full name.

More wireless access points.  Decent cell phone service (NOT Verizon, which doesn't work in all campus locations.)

Increases to wireless connectivity would be highly appreciated.

Walkup Wireless would be a neat idea as well (not requiring the VPN, but using Kerberos or some other mechanism).

Can't think of anything.

Need better filters for junk mail

I would like cites express to allow for mass emailing, rather than having to go through microsoft outlook.  The web page based email does not allow emailing over a certain number of people, and it is cumbersome.

Not sure.

more free software

FULL USENET NEWSGROUPS w/ BINARIES

Faster response to e-mails.

Bring telnet back

Spam-blocking support for email; and more space in the new Express email

hotline to report problems/delays...

Faster response to email problems

WIRELESS on whole campus, Faster internet!!

SSH access to Express Mail like there was for the cluster.

More reliable wireless service in more places

telnet-based express email

Newsgroups

Larger quota.

Spam guard

outgoing mail from student account

Free software. Like other campuses.

I would LOVE to see CITES offer telnet again with their new email system

Wireless network on the around the quad.

I'd like CITES to distribute more information about thier services.  I shouldn't be learning about services CITES provides while taking a survey trying to evaluate them.

TELNET FOR EXPRESSMAIL

(S)FTP FOR NETFILES

BRING BACK NEWSGROUPS

When I graduate I want an e-mail alum account similar to the express cites account I currently have.

the no busy dial-up

Bring back telnet

ethernet or high speed internet access at low cost to students, faculty

expanded computer assistance and repair for non network issue such as conflicts and computer errors due to education related software as well as virus recovery

webcam capabilities or atleast a network speed high enough for me to run my webcam.

Free webpage through the UIUC domain.

redhat campus license

Spam filtering.

I would like to see some more virtual services geared to teaching html and web-site making.  I remember seeing these offered in previous years, but I've not come across any information

about them recently.

More computer labs.

a less ghetto telnet, it is inconvenient how you can't copy and paste things, also how its impossible to figure out how to download files or access links contained in the emails

more help on using outlook

Telnet for express mails, it's so much faster and time consuming

more bandwidth for downloading and please for the love of god why are you getting rid of telnet. it's great even if many people are too stupid to know how to use it.

instant messaging services to answer questions instantaneously

Open later hours

Basic tutorial pages about computer programs, activities, cool computer stuff, etc.

a very very good spam blocker

Please offer more support for Mozilla browsers and email programs

(Mozilla suite, Firefox, Thunderbird)

i just want to see the webmail become a faster service.  the technology seems to be massively regressive from the old e-mail service, and it takes a very long time to upload an e-mail to me, upload the list to me or to access anything contained therein.

It would be nice if we could get actual tech support for our personal computers.

Bring back the cluster.

i hate express

an 'instant messaging' service for everyone on the network based upon their student id

not at this time

none

classroom training of unix, perl, php, etc.

computer classes

More ways to avoid junk mail

Better wireless access.

Also, I can't believe that I'm paying $30,000 a year to come to this university, and I see, to my horror, DOT MATRIX PRINTERS in the computer labs!!!! That's just absurd to me. I know Illinois's academic competitors in the engineering sciences would be equally appalled by your use of such printers. Please, get out of the 90s!

More access to CITES walkup computing in high-traffic areas like the Union and undergraduate library.

none

classes away to get rid of adware

None.

I'd like to see more wireless availability with laptops or tablet PCs that can be rented for an entire year.

Fax server

none

a way to get rid of viruses without getting a net tech (sofware maybe)

More walk-up locations

not sure

Better lab assistants ?

wireless internet access in dorms for basements/libraries/loungese.. just more wireless locations in general

CITES Email Express is not very user friendly.  The fonts are very small and hard to read, and the address book is a nightmare.  Web-mail was much easier to use, and all students that I've talked to agree

It's fine.

Some kind of anti-spam program that will, when set up, prevent spam from reaching my mailbox.

Better Net Techs in the University Residence Halls

Ever since I changed to express mail from the students cluster, I get about 40 pieces of spam per day.  I use imaps to have my email sent to my computer now because I do not like the webmail interface and my filters that worked on the students cluster do not work now (yes, I also set them up on the webmail site).  I would like to see CITES provide functional email before anyone worries about the support.

wirelss conections all around campus and let students know that they are available.

wireless on the WHOLE campus, espcially the quad when people are outside.

A sheet on how to access the internet in the library, with our own personnel computer. Krannert Center offers service as well but no one knows how to hook it up.

I would like the express mail to offer options for the order of display of e-mails (i.e. be able to permanently have most recent e-mails at the top)

Quicker response to filter known virus emails.  Seems like many virus emails have very similar attachments or message lines.  These emails should be filtered before reaching the students'

emails.

speed up cites email, mine has been sooo slow lately and i barely store anything

Go back to old webmail.

More wireless access

24 Hours Cites Lab... Campus desperately needs it !

Wireless network in Libraries, perhaps in dorm room

Notices on web pages when the network is having a problem.  I couldn't say how many times I've tried to connect to campus resources several times, without success, and sent an email, only to be told that this or that server was down.  Perhaps if notifications were made when servers are down (which does happen) there would be fewer of these types of problems.

More widespread wireless

Campus wide wireless networking!!!

More storage space, so that e-mails can be saved.

None

Better customer support and better virus detection, because what is offered is below satisfactory and when a virus is detected they aren't even cleaned from the computer, so it;s basically worthless.  The school should spend the money to offer better software for students.

none

Would like to see a place where university students can rent computing equipment such as laptops, modems, NIC cards, and so forth.

I hope that they offer wireless network in all dorms.

I would like our email (express) service to have more traditional formatting, like bold or italics and symbols.

there is nothign really

I use Linux, which really is not a unix, more people use Linux than Macs so make more Linux sup.

More wireless hot spots.

go back to webmail

campus-wide wireless

allow photos to be pasted in e-mail, font manipulations

KEEP TELNET!!

WEBMAIL AND CITES EXPRESS Email systems are VERY inefficient and slow and dumbed-down.

Express Mail looks so much worse then Webmail.  The set-up is cheaper, you can't see the subject line of the email once you open it, and the list of people who sent you the email is junked together with the email text.  I HATE express.  You also can't sort by the date accurately.  It sets the order up wierd.  We should have stuck with Webmail.  I hope there is a big cost savings associated with this transfer, otherwise, I don't see the point.  I don't like the new U of I website either.

it seems to be really slow recently

Find some way to get rid of the numerous amount of emails we get from seemingly uiuc accounts, that contain the same stupid file that is a joke or a virus, one of the two.  I have recieved about 100 of these e-mails in the last month.

support services aren't very  friendly

I have just changed to Express Email and I don't like it.  I don't like that I have the ANNOYING bar on the side that I don't need because everything is already available on the top or the bottom.  I wish I could hide it.  Also, am I supposed to delete all of my emails from my trash bin all the time?  Why can't it do it for me?  At first it was a little confusing to navigate.

I'm still figuring out what everything does and what everything is used for.  I want Webmail back!

A spam filtering system on expressmail would be great.

Please add any additional comments—suggestions, complaints, etc.—regarding this survey or about CITES Help Desk Support.

i get too much junk mail. is it possible to develop a better filtering system?

Get more net techs!

the new e-mail system is a huge hassle.  Changing my computer's settings and getting used to the new system were a huge hassle, and if anything, the switchover has made the e-mail service worse.

the VPN client is not very user friendly in respect to its setup and connection to the 'client' itself.  whatever explanation that is offered on the downloading site to help off-campus computer users is not sufficient enough for even the upper intermediate level PC user.

i am also not the only person who has expressed issues with this process.  being able to use this feature is necessary in many of the music classes i and other music students are involved with.  thank you.

It's been difficult to locate a Net tech, in my building, when I need help.

I don't really like the move to all web-based applications...they are generally more cumbersome to use.

The port that Express E-mail runs on is blocked by many Internet services at hotels and other universities.  I never had this problem with Webmail before making the switch earlier this semester.

I emailed CITES with a problem about logging on to the EWS network, and it took 2 months for CITES to reply.  Thanks for nothing.

You should be able to block people from sending email to the CITES accounts, I'm tired of getting spam!

don't get rid of telnet or ssh.  It was a big mistake to get rid of usenet.  I miss it already.  I don't like netfiles, I like the 10 megs on my student account.  I think its a waste to give everyone 100 megs because most people don't use or need that much space.

express email seems much slower than webmail was

750mbs per day is not enough:(

increase daily limit

Why did I have to switch from webmail even though I am a senior. I have little confidence in express mail because I have missed e-mails that people have said they sent to me.

I am satisfied with the CITES services.

I am very satisfied overall with CITES services!

ALL I WANT IN REGARDS TO CITES EXPRESS EMAIL IS TO HAVE NEW EMAIL SORTED AT THE TOP AND THE OLDEST BE AT THE BOTTOM.  I KNOW YOU CAN DO

THIS AFTER YOU LOGIN BUT I'D LIKE CITES TO REMEMBER MY SETTINGS NEXT TIME I LOG IN.

It would be nice if new email went to the top of the list in express.

Your new emails system stinks.  the old one was better.

The possiblility of having one password for all services (NetID, Computer Labs, Email, EnterpriseID, etc.)

CITES is very fast and efficient.  When I have internet problems here, which is often, CITES always works even if my internet is down.

CITES Express Mail stinks, especially compaired to WebMail. I really liked WebMail, and was really sad to have to give it up. The ExpressMail is too confusing; not very user friendly. I always used Internet Explorer to check my email, but since I was forced to switch to ExpressMail, I started using Outlook. ExpressMail was just too annoying/confusing. I miss Webmail.

Thumbs down to Express.

How about having the internet be not so random in terms of when it works and when it doesn't.  It's been very sparadic as of late.  Lets worry about the primary issues before worrying about adding additional features.

should have waited until the end of the semester to force switch to express mail. I like the interface better than webmail but it is extremely slow!!

No bandwidth limit

Speed limitation instead

Yeah - get rid of the crappy e-mail system that you just installed.  It is not half of the system that web-mail was.  I do not understand why you dropped a perfectly good program that many students were already intergrated into.

no bandwidth quota!

Express Mail needs more virus filters. I am constantly getting virus emails (about 20 a day), and it's becoming quite ridiculous.

It has never been down and the most relyable form of comunication besides telephone.

none

i'd like to get the spam filtered out of my email account. It's bloody annoying and plentiful.  Please work on that, I hate penis enlargement offers.

my CITES email is so infected.

I found that the service in the beginning of the year (when installing the patches) was very poor. I thought it was ridiculous that I had to wait a week to connect to the internet on my computer because the net techs didn't come by my room even though I signed up twice in my hall for them to do so.

For questions with multiple answers, please put the radio buttons near the answer, or make it clear which button goes with what response. Having to count down is not userfriendly.

Expressmail is the devil. Please provide a unix/linux ssh mail server.

some say the old email system was a lot better

I greatly prefered webmail to express.cites.

Much more user friendly and better options.

The biggest thing I would like to see changed is the online learning software.  Programs should be designed around the way that instructors and students will really use them.  For example, Blackboard has tons of features that have never been used in any of my classes.  This is because they are too complex and time-consuming for instructors to utilize them effectively.  If tools were kept simpler, and designed with non-technical staff in mind, they would be better.  But all in all, CITES is doing a good job.  I know how tough it is to design software for such a diverse group of users.

CITES does a truly well-rounded, all-around great job supporting the University and its faculty and students.

I don't know.

The old format of Webmail was a lot better- nicer looking and more appealing to use.  The new Express E-mail format is too formal and UGLY!

For the express email more options would be nice such as the order in which email appear, and email options such as font and color would be helpful.  Not allowing the same password for everything is aggrivation too.  Also the colors of the cites pages are very pukey looking, can we get the blue back like it is in webmail.  Lastley telenet is always a nice back up can that continue to be used, while its primitave its nice just to have incase internet browsers are not working correctley.

minimizes junk mail

the experience i had w/ cites techs was not enjoyable.  they were unable to help me over the phone and their attitude seemed as if they were fed-up since i was not a computer genius.

keep the cluster accounts

The viruses- although I know they are not the system's fault are horrible.  I have not been able to connect to the internet all semester due to problems with all of these viruses.

no large complaints

None.

PLEASE go back to WebMail!!  CITES Express Email is horrible!!  WebMail is much, much better!!

I really dont like cites express mail, I understand that you have to field less support calls for people that dont know how to use unix, but since express mail is still based of of unix machines couldnt you allow shell access to those of us who want it?

Ive been forced to abandon express mail altogether in favor of zeus.itg.uiuc.edu because the cluster is being dropped. Also I realize cites does not have much to do with this but the ews machines are also dropping support for email and that sucks.

well if you have more questions feel free to reply to me.

CITES email service sucks, and I think it is retarded how all the things are lined up on the side.  I do not know what the problem with WebMail was.  I liked how everything was across the top with Webmail.  I also do not like how CITES puts the new emails at the bottom, while the already read ones are at the top.  That serves no purpose.  Incoming mail should have priority over the mail in your inbox that has already been read.

faster start up

My password for the IC sites NEVER works. Ever. I change it to a password I remember every time, and the next time I arrive, it doesn't work. IC sites confuse and irritate me. All else good to go. :)

more space on express email.

printing fees are expensive

its good

the CITES help location is very far from the center of campus. Also, I would like to have them clean my computer of viruses, but how do I do that if it's not a lab top?

It might be wise to consider hiring more net techs considering I had to wait almost three weeks to get my PC online when I first came to the University last fall.

I hate the new email.  I used Webmail and recently switched and I don't like it.  I hate having to clean out the trash can all the time and it's hard to navigate compared to webmail.  I liked Webmail a lot better.

Im sick of recieving emails that are virus attachments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ever since the email virus that hit the network around January the mail system has been flooded with false emails from university addresses and a great deal of spam.  Previously Express Email was free of all junk.  Now it is 90% of my mail and clutters my box.  I'd like to see some preventative measures taken against the spam.

More wireless access points would be appreciated.  Distinction between housing RSC staff and CITES staff would be prefered as well - often each department is given credit or blamed for the doings of the other.

it's great~

I use the CITES service with muce satisfaction everyday. Once I got an very important servive which noticed me to install virus scan. it was really helpful since i am not good at computer things. Thanks always :)

My internet in my dorm has a tendency to just shut off at random intervals.  This happens at least once a week.  It kicks my off of AIM and I cannot go to any web pages.  It is very frustrating.

none

I don't know why you made everyone switch from Webmail to Express mail. It's confusing now, and Webmail was just fine.

Please make Epress mail more user friendly by ordering new e-mails at the top and in bold like Webmail.

i have different instructors who use webct, blackboard, and compass.  it would be good if there were one standard course management program that was used, so that students could access all their classes from one base.

I'm not usually connected to the University network, but when I took my laptop with wireless centrino to the Union and Library I was unable to connect.  It would set up a connection, but I'm not sure I was allowed access.  A better explanation to knew students on how to do this would be useful.

i'd like to know where i can find the wireless IP address so post it more easily on the web

It would be very helpful if CITES Express E-mail had auto-refresh like Webmail did. I miss webmail for that reason. I also would like to be able to save settings through Express E-mail such as sorting of e-mail and presentation of the website.

Better virus protection

The main problem I have come in contact with is the fact that there is a limit on mass emailing.  That is hard when sending emails out to a large group.  I have also found that it is very easy to go over quote, which is unfortunate and causes me to constantly be checking for that.

We have too many passwords.  It would be much easier if we could just use one password for everything.  It gets frustrating having to type in 50 different passwords trying to gain access to your e-mail or trying to log on to a computer at the library.  I also think it's completely retarded that we had to change our passwords once we were forced to change our e-mail from

Webmail to Express.

I would strongly recommend to have a junk mail filter introduced in our Express Mail Service!

'Express' server is much slower than the cluster servers ever were. Also, please allow Express filters to have more than 4 qualifiers - some of us have 18 filters that all perform the same action.

Some instructions are hard to follow, like installing VPN< even though i have it installed it won't work, someone mentioned that it could be firewalls, but if it is there needs to be a notice on the VPN installation process

My main complaint about having to switch to CITES mail is that I can not longer connect using telnet.  Connecting online takes much more time, and is not as reliable.

The network is very unstable in terms of whether it will work or not, which is something that desperatly needs to be addressed.  Likewise, the system should be turned on when the early

move in is, so that the students that move in early can have access to important information that we may need.

CITES need to provide mail blockers on e-mails. Because I received a lot of virus and unwanted e-mails.

For express mail, is it possible to have the orignal email inline when replying?

Cites Express mail is terrible in comparison to webmail.  we should go back to the old.  Why doesn't expressmail take you directly to new messages so that you know that you have them?

Don't get rid of the students cluster

See above.

The CITES services has many virus emails sent to my Inbox. This sometimes can effect my computer. That is not cool.

Cites is not a good system...I have lost a lot of important e-mails while with cites and it is hard to retrieve information from cites.

An email check station in the Ansic Lab would be very helpful.  This is a hub for Ansci students.

I did not know there was a quota.  I think CITES should do a better job at awaring students of that because they may miss some important emails because of the quota.

I am very satisfied with their services.

EXPRESS MAIL IS SO MUCH WORSE THAN WEBMAIL!! I want to switch back! New mail should be listed first before old mail!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes e-mail access at the Union is painfully slow and doesn't work very well, although I do appreciate that it is available!

I want to be able to access my email using pine.

add more walk up computers in the union

staff tands to be unhelpful

Is there any reason why all of these switches had to be done DURING THE YEAR? Especially for those that are graduating?

Please update the computers inside the union. Thanks!

The University should not have permission to read our emails under any circumstances.  Also Cites needs to stop the 50 viruses i get per day

Since I have switched to CITES express mail from my students cluster account, my spam/virii mail count shot high up.  From what I have been told, CITES is no longer allowed to filter mail, due to some sort of Freedom of Speech [removed].  Add my survey to the list of complaints that you have to show whoever said you can't filter my mail.

Also, the latest stable version of `mutt' has a difficult time dealing with the IMAP server's choice of directory delimiter ('.').  Basically, I can't change mail directories.  I don't know what to suggest to fix that, but it sucks for me.  I now have to forward my mail elsewhere because IMAPS is not a solution for me.

i'd like to be able to access the mshome workgroup, which i have difficutly doing

don't have computer labs, build in lap top rental fee to the cost of tuition, with wireless everywhere

I would really like to see CITES support a fast, stable, reliable wireless conection for the dorms and/or student appartments

I am annoyed that all email accounts must be switched to CITES.  I've been using webmail, and am quite happy with it.

CITES does a good job, keep up the good work.

My computer has been destroyed since using the internet, help serivies and de-bugging programs (from the beginning of the year). My computer has crashed three times, I've lost everything, I still have internet problems that nobody can solve. I have no viruses and I don't use any programs that aren't compatible with my system. I am fed up with having the quality of my computer being compromised by your systems.

OnSite Consulting Rocks!

ease of use of Express Mail--  it's pretty decent, although some features would add to its attractiveness--

put log out button on top of screen instead of bottom left, give font, character size, etc. options.  I know, quite petty, but often there's those little things that irk people...

The wording of questions 47 and 48 could use some work.

Also, I would suggest distributing this form over 5 seperate pages.  If someone accidentally hits back while completing the survey, all of their responses are lost, and they will almost definitely not re-fill out the survey.  With a multi-page survey, responses will be stored on the server incrementally, preventing a large amount of input from being lost.

I don't like the default page the cites email express leads me to each time I finish deleting some emails, other it pops back to the front of the list, or to the end, when I really want the current page I just deleted or viewed the emails at.

I would like to see the 24-hour lab reinstated.  This was a major setback for students and has really hindered my ability to complete tasks.  I don't have a computer in my campus home.

Need better filters for junk mail

A few of the questions referred to services I had not heard of, but as far as CITES services in general, I'm pleased.  Any problems seem to get fixed in a timely manner.

compass has a lot of bugs needed to be fixed.

I'm not sure if you control the phone service, but there have been times where I have heard other people's conversations on my line, and they could hear me...very annoying.

Cites Express Mail was invented to get rid of the problems with WebMail but now that I use cites I have more problems than before.  More junk mail and just more problems in general.

I have some TAs who cannot email me in mass emails and the only reason we can find is that the 'cluster' email service automatically sends emails to students.uiuc.edu, even though many students are now on express.

Also, when I opened this survey all of my inputs into the Mallard online quiz I had open were lost.  I've been losing all of my data whenever I go to another webpage and then hit the back button to get back to Mallard (even if I'm just following a link from the Mallard quiz).

stop lying about bandwidth like with the claim that we get '750 megs daily unrestricted' when its really only 600

WebCT is a very bad program with a lot of flaws.  Please get rid of it.  Express e-mail is terrible.  It is very slow and tedious to use, bring back Telnet!

Bring telnet back

express mail is extremely slow this week, following recent modifications to it

express mail is slow!

Faster response in general

CITES Email is very slow, at times.

i want telnet or ssh-based express email. the web service for express email is just as slow, if not slower, than the old webmail.

The Cites express email site is extremely slow to load, delete or do anything with and the interface is not user friendly.  The typeface is also far too small.  Most importantly, SPEED UP THE SITE!

Make Walk-up computing more accessible and install wireless internet in the library!

Getting an e-mail address from the address book has so many steps and is time consuming.  Is there a way to shorten the process?

Since the system was recently updated everything was slowed down, such as receiving messages, sending messages, writing messages, etc. I don't know if that is only temporary but it really is taking a long time to do the simplest tasks that used to only take seconds.

since the update of the express mail over spring break, it's running slower than ever.  i wait around 2 minutes for it to load and so on for each email i click to read.

Bring back Webmail!!  Cites is horrendous.  I get sent 3 to 4 email viruses per day.  Cites is increasingly slow and even comes to a point when my inbox doesn't even fully load.  Come on!!

I hate the restrictions on passwords and the ancient format of all pages and programs

I get way too much junk mail and I'm not sure why. I wish we could eliminate that!

Email has been very very slow lately.

I just wanted to add that I think Netfiles is great.

Express email has been running very slowly.

the quality of the computers in the union on the ground floor are poor, the keyboards don't always work right and they are often extremely slow

cites express email has been very slow for the past few weeks.

The VPN service is confusing and has problems when trying to connect.

Everytime this email is sent out, it takes two minutes or more to connect to my express mail account because everyone is using their account at the same time.  I have a DSL connection and

it usually only takes a matter of seconds.

Express email is incredibly slow and ugly.  What was wrong with webmail?

Cites is probably one of the best networks that I've seen as far as solving problems quickly and reliably.

The plethora of passwords that I am forced to come up with is ridiculous. I would rather have someone steal my password. I don't really care that someone can see my DARS report.

Having to change a stolen password is worth nothing having to constantly retype passwords because I can't remember which is which.

More throughput

My biggest complaint with cites is that it doesn't have the power to eliminate SPAM very well. I recieve roughly 40-50 junk emails a day and have never given my school email address out

to any business.

the quota is extremely low in express mail

webmail was better

my teachers have difficulty using the course management sites especially compass, which i also find difficult

Would like a 24 hour lab back, this would be very helpful to me.

You should teach students to use the classroom technology instead of professors, because many of them just forget, and it's annoying to sit in a crowded lecture hall watching an old guy struggle with his microphone/powerpoint/etc.

There is a slow response time from the Help Desk and why is that not evaluated in this survey.  Also, I think it's a real pain that students who take a semster off to do an internship or the like cannot keep their email accounts.  It would have been all right if the forwarding process that is suggested to students who still want to receive email going into their accounts, actually WORKED!!

N/A

Wireless in business schools often goes in and out.  VPN client significantly negatively affects the resources on my PC.

I think that quota for Express Email should be greater.

needs to be faster

I REALLY miss TELNET!!!!!! Please bring it back. I am not really a fan of webmail or express cites at all. Unix prompts are so much easier and faster to use. Please bring back telnet!

the CITES registered organizations webhosting 'control panel' is the most user unfriendly thing I have seen in my life and forced my organization to purchase a hosting service as opposed to using our RO account on cites.  Running a website from the student cluster with a UNIX command line was much much better.  Also, express mail is a horrible webmail client.

Sometimes the network speed is way too slow, so slow that I wouldn't be able to view any e-mail.

I, for one, am not happy about having to give up pine and use CITES express.  Also, I have talked to many people about switching to CITES, and I have only found one person who has any positive feeling for it at all.  Some people I know who have never used anything but CITES express also don't like it, so I know that it is not just change in habit that is causing the displeasure.

1) As of yesterday and today, express email is going really slow.... hopefully that is going to be fixed soon.

2)Some of those email stations in the Union don't really work too well either.

3)I like the netfiles service :)

4)I'm starting to get junkmail (just one really annoying one) Don't know if there exists a spam blocker somewhere in cites.

thanks

The cites email service has been running extremely slow

Spamming in the express cites e-mail has been minimal, but has seemed to increase lately.

After Spring Break the Cites Express Email was much much slower and sluggish compared to before Spring break.

CITES was my preferred email, until the end of 2003, early 2004- it has all gone downhill. Logging in takes a long time occaisionnaly, and my mailbox is berated with spam and fake messages. It's a pain to use, and I am trying to find an alternative mail system.

bring back telnet

I have found the use of the vpn client extremely problematic and the switch to using the vpn system in place of loging in via bluestem for systems such as the music library, to be an academic hinderance.

Questions in section 4.2 are confusing: do you want to know whether or not instructors are using those features?  Or do you want to know whether or not students like those features when instructors do use them?

Express Cites email is not user friendly and it is almost impossible to send an attachment with an email.  I prefer Webmail for my email usage and I am upset that we were forced to switch.

I've been bombarded by surveys throughout the whole academic year.  I don't mind filling them out, as long as they do some good.

I took a survey very similar to this a couple weeks ago...

I've been told that a lot of people are getting more spam after switching from students cluster to express.

advertise wireless networks. If these networks are out there, I do not know about them, but would love to utilize them.

I really liked the speed of telnet and I'm sad to see it gone.  Express is definitely better than webmail, but I wish it were faster.  Also, since the update of Sunday morning, I have not been able to use Javascript frames in Express.  This makes my email-reading sessions considerably slower.  You see, when I have the Javascript frames enabled, I am asked if I want to display the non-secure items on the page.  It doesn't matter if I pick yes or no; the upper band of the display will go away and turn into an Error Page.  Then when I read a message and delete it from the message-text screen, I lose the bottom screen in the same way: it turns into an Error Message.

At the library, it's the wireless connection isn't very good, it's really slow and difficult to get a good signal

I think that CITES needs to find a way to send out large group emails.

Everything is running really slow lately.

As of right now no one that i know has the ability to access their e-mail at any reasonable speed.  THis can be extremely frusterating when you have your classes that absolutely depend on your e-mail being available to us 24/7.

overall a very good service

it would be nice if cites express had a search option where someone inputs subject and then all the emails w/ that subject name are listed.

CITES needs to be abolished for at least change dramatically. I demand that only seniors and juniors in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering be allowed to work to CITES. Also, I would like to know how on earth somebody is able to work for CITES and not know what an IP address is? CITES is incompetent!

The cluster was far better at preventing the spread of spam and viruses than the new Express Email system, even with filters and blockers. I would like to see the new network take steps to improve this.  However, Express Email is improved in terms of speed and ease of use over WebMail.  Well done.  I'll still miss good old Pine, though.

SAVE TELNET.

Cites email sucks. I was extremely happy using Telnet, and now I can't use it anymore.

CITES Express Mail web-access is far slower compared to the old webmail. And the PCs in the Union and English lab are slow and outdated.

have server on Cites Email express work faster

I don't understand why CITES deletes E-mails in the Inbox after a certain period of time. They should not be deleted unless the user wants the E-mails to be deleted.

The system is very slow and checking emails take very long.

the first day i logged on having never opened my email account before, i couldn't do anything because i had passed my storage limit. this was done because i had 800 spam messages

waiting in my inbox. this needs immediate improvement.

email accounts obtain too much spam.  and many emails are not delivered into the email accounts, therefore, are never recieved.

Please get connected with affiliated universities abroad.  I am studying at the University College Cork in Ireland and today is the first time I have been able to access my UIUC email account from a campus computer ever since the switch to Express.

I would be primarily using the students cluster for access if it were not being retired.

Express mail is a huge improvement from Webmail, but it still seems too slow for checking mail.  Also, I noticed that the indecies for the old sent-mail folders created by pine show the from field in express mail, so I have to look at individual e-mails to see who it was too.  It's can end up taking some time to find what I want.  Overall, express mail isn't too bad :).

Doesn't the odd port number make it hard to access from behind some firewalls, though?

Please offer more support for Mozilla browsers and email programs

(Mozilla suite, Firefox, Thunderbird)

see 52.

Express mail is by far the biggest piece of junk ever made. I hope whoever okayed using Express is jobless, homeless, penniless, castrated (if it a man) and starving in a gutter somewhere. It is hard to truly express my anger that I am no longer able to use Webmail. Any email software that does not allow the user to specify the newest emails in to be the first

emails you see is utterly idiotic. I would honestly like to know what when thru the person's head who okayed unleashing this curse upon the students. We pay good money to go here. I now know my tuition is not going to a quality email system or else Webmail wouldn't have been phased out.

Provide more wireless access.

Need better connection to express email... website runs slowly from any computer.

I hate express email!!!! Webmail was great and I'm not happy that I had to switch to Express. It is very slow and not nearly as convenient as webmail was.

Express email is the most utterly horrible email service i have ever used.  webmail was great and now its gone.  thank you university for adding that much more trouble to my day.

The CITES express e-mail inbox display should allow you to make the e-mails in the inbox organized by date with the most recent at the top and the least recent at the bottom.  It's annoying having to scroll down or click the date ^ button every time you access it.

The email cite has been extremely slow. In addition, I do not have a lot of emails in folders, and I still have problems with my capacity.  I don't really understand why this would continually be a problem.

I Liked the set up of the webmail better than the new express mail.

We are on a T1 connection and yet it took 5 minutes for any page of my e-mail to load for 3 days. I also was unable to send out any e-mails during this time from my account. Totally unacceptable. What are you guys doing on your job? Partying??

the people at the cites help desk assisted me efficiently and effectively when i encountered trouble with email viruses.

however, i have just been switched from webmail to cites email. quite honestly, the webmail service may have offered less storage, slower service (or whatever the reasons they mention...)

but it is more user friendly. i.e. more visually stimulating, easier to understand. there is only one scrolling device, the usual one for up and down movement.....as opposed to many scrolling devises for up/down/side to side. maybe if you guys had someone to help with graphic arts...

I think the CITES Express Mail graphics and color scheme are very bland and boring. I preferred the blue color of webmail. I also find it frustrating that the Express Mail server is often very slow. With webmail, there were rarely problems accessing emails and being able to read them and respond to them quickly. Now I find it takes much longer because I have to continually wait for the server to load.

I think the express mail sucks and i would love to have webmail back. And i cant get my outlook configured for Express email. And it takes way too long for the page to load and im just not happy with it overall.

I'm disgusted by the unreliability of your network here. I can't believe that the same university that houses some of the finest computer science, and electrical and computer engineering departments in the US, can also house such a poor network.

The way questions about specific technology (such as the VPN) in this survey are confusing.  The technology isn't explained well, so I don't know if I use it or not.

It would be nice if everything including e-mail, scheduling, registration, etc. were available at the same place. It would be much more convienient to be able to log into CitesExpress and be able to check emails and also be able to look at schedules and registration times without having to go to all kinds of other places and entering so many different passwords. Its

inconvenient - please find a way to group it all together (go to www.wisc.edu and go to MyWisc - looks like that)

none

the express email is often too slow, also, i didn't appreciate being switched from cluster to express mid-semester

As a student who used Webmail for the past two and a half years, I am highly disappointed with the Cites system, as it is not nearly as convienent or user friendly as the Webmail system was.  Also, it seems somewhat ridiculous to make those who were still using Webmail, persumably juniors, seniors, and graduate students, as well as faculty to change to Cites when the turnover of those students leaving was most likely two years at most.  Also, the inability of the University to control the massive amounts of spam and viruses shows the inability of the system to do what it is supposed to do: make available a venue for communication in a safe and effective manor.  With viruses, spam, and bouncebacks occuring daily, the system has rendered itself ineffective and a hassle in my opinion.

Express mail has been loading very slowly these past few weeks, and often times I cannot log-in. I receive an error message. It is very annoying.

I actually prefered Webmail over Cites Express Mail, and probably would not have switched over to Express Mail if I didn't have to.

better virus scanner, pop up blockers

My e-mail seems to fail or be very slow at times.

It's just been so frustrating when half of the time I try to check my email it won't even let me get to the page to log in because there was some kind of error, and then when i finally can log in later in the day, it is usually very very slow. I miss telnet.

Overall, CITES is great. The only problem I've experienced lately is that the CITES Express Email has been either not working or running very slow more often. It comes and goes.

Cites has been failing regularly since they made me switch from Webmail to Cites and I hate it.  It's down frequently, and oftentimes has denied me the ability to delete Emails.

My main concern with Cites regards the Express E-mail. I am very disappointed with the change to the new e-mail system and prefer the previous WebMail system. It is very difficult to obtain messages at times due to the system being down. With the occurance of more and more spam e-mail in my account, it is very difficult to maintain messages because of the minimal storage space.  Also, today I have about 40 or so spam e-mail in my inbox that I am not even able to delete which is very annoying because I am almost at storage capacity.  I would appreciate if a new system was created that would be much more efficient and better than Express E-mail.  WebMail was much more user-friendly, efficient, and easy to use. If new technologies and such are going to be developed, I would appreciate if they were of better calibur than the previous, which in this situation is not the case.  I am a student, and, therefore, I don't have the time to worry about whether or not I will be able to access my e-mail which is important to my everyday life.  I need the assurance that accessing my e-mail will be a convenience to me and not a hindrance.  I would certainly appreciate it if something could be done soon to correct these problems.  Maybe there needs to be some re-evaluation of the 'new' system.  It may be a convenience to Cites and the people who run the system, but to the general public it is definitely a 'pain in the butt' (excuse my French).

Thanks and I hope that this is resolved soon.

Express Mail is terrible! It has caused many problems with using Outlook. It downloads messages repeatedly I often check my Outlook to find that I have 50-100 new messages because the same messages were downloaded over and over again. I called tech support about this problem and no one was able to help. Everyone seemed very uninformed about the system. I felt like I had to explain how e-mail systems worked to many of the people I talked to. Please don't force people to switch to a system that doesn't work. Also if you don't plan on making seniors switch tell them this earlier. Not 5 months later after many have already switched.

Also many times when I use the Express website to check my e-mail the central portion of the website does not load up. It will only load the left side toolbar. I often have to refresh the

page 3 or 4 times in order to check my mail.

Express mail sucks

bring back telnet for express email users!! i had to change from webmail, but i loved telnet. it's a faster way to access email.

I recently converted from webmail to express, and since then I have received much much more junk mail.  It's rather annoying.

none

when you need a Net Tech it is TERRIBLE-you have to wait awhile and sometimes they really dont seem like they know what they are doing

I would like more abilities in express email, such as font changes and graphics.

For some reason, Hendrick House (CSH) is not considered part of the Universty of Illinois with regards to internet traffic over the Abilene network (internet2.edu).

I would love to be able to store more data to netfiles, perhaps 50 to 100 megabytes more than it is now.

Well, fix the Express Mail...when you are in the trash bin and look at a particular e-mail and click 'delete'...the next screen displayed is an imaginary blank one...you have to click 'next' or

'previous' to go the next e-mail.  Please get rid of this imaginary blank screen.

At the moment, cites express email is very slow, it's annoying.

Sometimes the Net Techs in the Residence Halls do not know anything about computers. With past experiences they have been of no help to my problems.

have internet explorer available on walkup computers, make express email new messages visible first and then have successive pages contain old messages,

FYI, your service has a huge tendancy to cache sites as unavailable.  I find myself using Google Translate to access sites a lot (when I know the site is online).

The email filter within the past month has been extremely poor. If there is a problem with viruses, more emails should be sent to users to update them on what they should do.

Replying to online help requests is very slow.

PINE access to CITES Express needs to be implemented

I only receive about half of the email that is sent to me.  Perhaps someone could email me a response as to why this might be happening.  Please mail [email removed] because I don't get my mail sent to [email removed] .

there should be an unsend button so you can unsend emails and revise them and then resend them

I don't like that you cannot send e-mails to mass e-mail lists. For three different organizations I'm involved in, I have to send e-mails to more than 100 people and I can no longer do that easily. Also, although my address book transferred from Webmail, all of my names were in Webmail format (without the @uiuc.edu attached) and that proved to be a huge problem.

better spam control

DNS lookup is very slow on many occassions.  Why is service down after midnight without any notifications?

I really hate the new express mail interface.  I think it is not user-friendly.

PLEASE PUT A VIRUS SCANNER FOR THE EMAIL SERVERS. WWW.MAILSCANNER.INFO  NOT HARD TO DO, VERY EFFECTIIVE

contact me if you want help, which i'm doubting you need.

I am not happy with the net-tech services.

Get rid of the value card printng system in DKH and other labs, it is annoying and inconvienent.

too slow

Do not like the setup of Cites Express.  Need more options

Go back to old webmail.  It is a lot better then cites.  I recently switched my old account over to cites and I am very disappointed with cites.  I thought that the old webmail services was a lot better.  One big complaint I have is the determination of viewed email.  It was much easier to know which emails were new or old using the old webmail(since they were bold typed).

I there is a way for me to change my cites accout to have my new mail be bold instead of just the very very very tiny closed as opposed to open envelope next to my mail.

I am secretary of 2 RSO's and with Webmail, I was able to send out e-mails to all members at once. With Express, I have to send 3 separate e-mails because it says 'too many recipients.' I

wish you'd allow e-mails like this, since I cannot get a listserve because I do not have an office in the RSO Complex at the Union.

As a general rule, I have been very pleased with all of the incredible services that are offered me as a student. My only complaint is that I'm not aware of all of the resources that are

available to me besides email (like Netfiles, etc.) It would be nice to be provided with that information in some sort of 'user-friendly' explaination of how to utilize those resources.

Easier Spam blocking with more information on setting up blocks

I want Webmail back!!

I am fairly disappointed with the new express email system.

The network line in my dorm room is sometimes extreamly slow. I thought it was just my room, but I heard from my friends thier network was slow too. I hope CITES solves this problem ASAP.

the only problem with the servoce is all the virus emails that keeping coming into my inbox _ can something be done about this?

I wouldn't mind if a little more was done to filter our email before it is sent to us.  I have had several rashes of viruses being sent to my email inbox, and if the university servers would simply scan for viruses in attachments I wouldn't have this problem.  My computer scans for viruses in email, but it is an inconvenience when I receive such a large number of them and the problem could be handled server side.  Also, I think that the class newsgroups should be taken down in favor of things like webboard.  The problem with the newsgroups is that I'm sure my involvement in a class newsgroup this semester has been the source of many of my virus-spam emails that I have received, as the newsgroup requires that, when I post, my address becomes instantly available to anyone that decides to read the newsgroups, and this has caused nothing but pain and agony for me.  I never had this problem in previous semesters when all class communications were conducted on webboards, because using those services doesn't blast my email address around for the entire campus to see.  I also receive a much larger amoount of spam now than I did in the past, and I also attribute this to the use of class newsgroups.  Another problem is the random spattering of different networks around the campus.  When connecting on a computer system is some random lab, I never know what kind of operating system I will be confronted with, or even what part of the network I'm connecting to/what password and username I need to use.  There have been several times that I've decided not to use campus computers because I simply had no idea what I was supposed to do to login to them.  And this also causes my data to be scattered around the four corners of the campus servers, so that I don't have all access to my data when I do login.  This time I'm connecting to EWS, that time I'm connecting the the main network, the other time, who knows?  It shouldn't be hard to have some type of central repository for student accounts so that I can use one login, one password, and have access to what I need no matter what computer I sit at.

I don't like the fact that students had to switch from webmail to cites express mail.  I was more comfortable using webmail and it seemed more user friendly.  I do not like cites express mail at all.

It should not take a week and a half for a net tech to come and verify my computer has no viruses after the network shut it off.

KEEP TELNET!!!

It's so much faster than web-based email systems when you just want a quick check of your email...and I know it has the 'disadvantage' of not being able to view pictures when you open an email...but most of the emails with pictures that I receive...I don't want to see that anyway!

None

The format for the survey is very had to follow.  The selection buttons are too far away from the option that they stand for.

I am very disappointed that my Microsoft Entourage is not compatible with the new cites.express server.  Despite several attempts to follow the directions to connect, I was never successful.

I really like the dial a tech service, that has been extremely helpful to me throughout this year.

cites has not been helpful to try to help me use Microsoft Outlook 2000

I hate having to use the VPN to connect to the wireless network.  IT DOESN'T WORK. It's not just me who can't use it.  I know of 20+ smart CS students who can't connect.

none

I find not being able to send email *from home, outside of the network* with Outlook through the CITES express email service quite annoying. Please allow email to pass through your servers.

I know this is a small grievance, but the font for email is just so ugly, even if you just offered Times New Roman, it would make a world of difference.

Your email system filled my computer with viruses!!!!!!!! Not happy at all with that measures taken to fix the problem!

students should be able to access volume controls on university computers in order to mute sounds

nothing, i haven't ahdany problems.

in december the server was shut down and it said it was going to last a couple hours yet the system was not up for me for an entire week which was a REALLY BIG INCONVENIENCE.

It would be fun to use color in the email font!

People should be allowed to go over the quota for maybe a day at a time.  I have had times where I need to email myself several projects and I start bouncing email.

I use Linux, which really is not a unix, more people use Linux than Macs so make more Linux sup.

some wireless networks are very unstable or patchy. Ex: 3rd floor of Grainger, Seibel, DCL.

cut down on unnecessary costs such as instructional tools. Keep unix based accounts and tools.

Complaint--The new Firewall

Restarting the computer doesn't solve EVERY problem!!!!!  Cites workers almost always suggest restarting the computer to every problem.

offer more software, reduced price or free.  more hotspots around campus (esp in large lecture halls)

improve any issues with Mac systems, this is very important to me.  The union macs are not properly programmed to prevent user modifications with is annoying!

The layout is very confusing and not visually appealing for reading emails.

KEEP TELNET!!

WEBMAIL AND CITES EXPRESS Email systems are VERY inefficient and slow and dumbed-down.

For those of us who are smart enough to actually USE a computer, please don't do away with this service.

often i have tried to get a net tech to come and look at my computer but they are never where they say should be. i don't know if this is CITES department but net techs need to be more

available
