Patch your systems to safeguard both yourself and your network neighbors

Microsoft has identified a new vulnerability which could allow an attacker complete control over your Windows operating system. All vulnerable Windows systems should be patched to the most current level available.

Vulnerable systems

  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003

How to protect your system

Antivirus software by itself is not sufficient to protect your computer from this vulnerability. Your Windows operating system must also be patched.

  • Windows systems users must go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and run the "Scan for Updates" option listed there. All critical Windows patches should be installed.

  • All users must make sure that their antivirus software is up to date and scheduled to run regularly. UIUC students, faculty, and staff can learn more about free site-licensed antivirus software at http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/antivirus/.

More information from Microsoft is available from http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/ms03-039.asp.

System security is a matter of ongoing vigilance that affects both your own system and your network neighbors. By patching your system regularly, you both protect yourself from potentially damaging attacks and help prevent attacks on the UIUC campus network and the Internet as a whole.
