Using Guest Tickets
This page describes how to use guest tickets in NetFiles to share documents with non-NetFiles users.
Collaborating with non-NetFiles users
CITES NetFiles accounts are available only to current University faculty, staff, and students, but you can grant temporary file access (called guest ticketing) to people who do not have a NetFiles account. Guest tickets can be created for both individual files and entire directories. You can even allow your guests to publish files to your NetFiles account.
By creating guest tickets for files rather than placing them in your public (shared or www) directories, you have much more control over who accesses your files.
Using guest tickets
To create a ticket
- Upload the file you wish to send. (For instructions, see Using CITES NetFiles on the Web.)
- Navigate to the directory that contains your file.
- Click the Share button
next to the file you wish to create a ticket for. - Click the Tickets button in the toolbar.
- Click the Create Ticket button.
- Select the type of Ticket you would like to create. Basic tickets create a direct link to your file or directory. Advanced tickets create a link to the file or directory but require your guests to enter a password to access the file.
- Next you will set
the level of access your guests will have to the file or directory and how long the ticket will last.
- Define Permissions - Read allows your guests to view and download files. Read and Write allows them to view, download, and upload files.
- Lifetime - Enter a number and select the unit of measure (minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, or years).
- Ticket Password (Advanced only) - Enter the password that guests will be required to enter to access your files.
- Click OK to create the ticket.
- NetFiles creates a URL for your file, which you can paste into an email message to allow others to view the file. You can also use the email button to create a new message containing the link to your file.
- Click the Back button on the NetFiles toolbar (not your browser toolbar) until you return to your directory listing.
To email an existing ticket
- Click on the Share button
of the file or directory for which you wish to email a guest ticket. - Click on the Tickets button in the toolbar. The list shows all the tickets for the file or directory you selected.
- Click on the Email button
for the ticket.
- All files have a link listed under Use this link to allow others to access this directory without entering
a password. You can either copy and paste the link listed here and email it to your guests or click on the
Email Link button to send an email generated by NetFiles.
Note: The Email button will open your computer's default email client. If you use a web-based email client, such as the Express Email web interface, you will need to copy and paste the link into your message body instead of using the NetFiles email button. - Password-protected files have an additional link under Use this link to require others to provide the password you have designated. You can either copy and paste the link listed here and email it to your guests or click on the Email Link button to send an email generated by NetFiles.
