Role: Network Services Coordinator
Campus Information Technologies & Educational Services of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks to fill one or more full-time positions in the Networking Division. In addition to designing, building, and operating the campus data network, the Networking Division is responsible for campus-wide network services, like DNS. The position is in the Network Services Group and the individual will participate in research and development of new or improved services, which support the campus network community. The successful candidate will be able to learn rapidly and contribute to the development and maintenance of a highly reliable, high-performance suite of network services, as well as be able to keep up with the latest developments in networking and telecommunications and consider how they could benefit campus.
Areas of responsibility may include:
- Conduct research and provide feasibility analysis on a set of technologies on a given project.
- Work with clients, Network Services manager and appropriate CITES staff to create Service Level Definitions.
- Follow development life cycle from functional and technical requirements gathering to preparing for project deployment.
- Coordinate the implementation plans for newly created services.
- Complete technical development and integration projects based on agreed specifications, timelines, and milestones.
- Coordinate security, service backup and disaster recovery plans with CITES staff from various areas.
- Coordinate documentation, training and support for clients.
- Run the service, make configuration changes as needed, and monitor its performance.
- Perform computer programming in one or more high-level languages to enhance the functions and features, or fix problems.
- Follow defined project management methodologies.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably in computer science or related field).
- Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently.
- In depth understanding of TCP/IP networking protocols & performance.
- Understanding of Virtual LANs, VLAN tagging protocols, and related technologies.
- Understanding of Ethernet switching & routing.
- Experience with IP applications.
- Working knowledge of web content formats.
- Experience with Linux, UNIX, and/or Windows administration.
- Understanding of cross-platform networking issues.
- Familiarity with networking tools for monitoring or managing or analyzing network traffic.
- Understanding of 802.11 a/b/g wireless technology.
- Experience with user interface / human factors design.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Strong desire and motivation to learn and stay current with new and changing technologies.
Highly recommended qualifications
- Experience with DNS and/or DHCP.
- Understanding of IP telephony technologies, and PBX systems.
- Understanding of cellular and mobile technologies.
- Understanding of Unified Messaging concepts.
- Familiarity with Network Security Devices, like Firewalls, IDS/IPS, or NAC
- Development experience using XML, SOAP, Apache CGI applications, Java servlets, or other web application frameworks.
- Development experience with RDBMS is a plus.
