Research Programmer - Enterprise Backup System Engineer
Role: Enterprise backup system engineer, Systems Management Group.
Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks to fill a position in the Systems Management Group. The Systems Management Group provides support for CITES production systems, provides cost-recovery support to campus units, designs and maintains the CITES storage and backup infrastructure, and administers the campus Active Directory service. This position is a full time academic professional position and will primarily be responsible for providing 24x7 support for the CITES enterprise data backup infrastructure, including server(s), storage, tape library and tape subsystems, and reports to the Manager.
Primary responsibilities
- Manage the CITES enterprise data backup infrastructure in accordance with best practices, including system and network security, performance tuning, business continuity and disaster recovery planning.
- Configure, troubleshoot, upgrade, and maintain the CITES enterprise data backup infrastructure.
- Develop utilities and procedures to monitor performance, problems, and utilization, while optimizing the usage of personnel resources.
- Develop applications and procedures to manage systems effectively and efficiently.
- Assist in support of the CITES storage infrastructure, as needed and as appropriate.
- Provide support to customers of the CITES data backup service.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and at least three years of relevant experience.
- Experience with maintaining data backup systems.
- Experience with a wide range of disk storage arrays and subsystems.
- System administration experience with current operating system platforms, such as Linux, Windows, OS X, and various Unix flavors.
- Hardware and software troubleshooting skills.
- Advanced scripting skills with Perl, Bash, and Ksh, some experience with higher level programming languages. Ability to maintain existing accounting and reporting scripts.
- Excellent customer service skills, and the ability to communicate effectively in a wide range technical and non-technical levels.
- Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
- Interest in keeping up with current technology, acquiring new skills, and sharing technical knowledge with colleagues.
Desirable Qualifications
- Extensive experience with a commercial enterprise backup product, such as IBM Tivoli Storage Manager and disaster recovery techniques.
- Strong AIX system administration skills.
- Experience with maintaining enterprise tape library systems. IBM 3494, 3590, and 3592 (TS1120) highly desired.
- Experience with high speed networking, switching, routing, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with fiber channel, and iSCSI storage protocol configuration.
- Experience with commercial database disaster recovery techniques.
- Current IBM Tivoli Storage Manager certification.
- Experience with maintaining a web server, including CGI programming, with Perl and PHP, and web page development using style sheets.
