Research Programmer: Network Engineering
Role: Network Engineer, full time.
Campus Information Technologies & Educational Services of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks to fill a full-time position in the Networking Division. The Networking Division is responsible for designing, building and operating the campus data network, UIUCnet, as well as designing, installing and upgrading local area networks for campus-related departments. In addition, the group provides Internet connectivity to the campus as well as providing remote network access to students, faculty, and staff. The position is in the Network Engineering Group and the individual will work on the many projects associated with UIUCnet.
The successful candidate will be able to learn rapidly and contribute to the development and maintenance of a highly reliable, high-performance network upon which the campus critically relies, as well as be able to keep up with the latest developments in networking and telecommunications and consider how they will be used in future generations of the network.
Areas of responsibility may include:
- Providing data network designs for campus-related projects
- Where required, providing ongoing service management of existing deployed network services
- Configuring, implementing, and monitoring network equipment deployed as part of UIUCnet
- Providing input and consulting for in-building network design projects
- Conducting product research and evaluation
- Maintaining scripts, programs, databases, and files used to operate, monitor, maintain, and document UIUCnet
- Serving in rotation for after-hours on-call duty to respond to serious problems with UIUCnet backbone equipment when notified by Network Operations personnel
- Serving as contact for backbone procedural questions from campus faculty, staff, and students
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree and at least one year relevant experience
- Knowledge of TCP/IP networking protocols and performance
- Experience working with Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switching hardware
- Understanding of Virtual LANs, VLAN tagging protocols, and related technologies
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of IP routing
- Understanding of wireless networking concepts including wireless Ethernet and wireless mesh
- Experience with wireless networking hardware such as 802.11 access points and point-to-point wireless bridges
- Knowledge of and experience using SNMP statistical data to monitor network health
- Understanding of network troubleshooting concepts and a demonstrated ability to implement a troubleshooting methodology
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Experience with the Unix operating system
- Knowledge of a scripting language such as Perl or Python
Highly recommended qualifications
- Knowledge of IP routing and dynamic routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP
- Experience with and ability to troubleshoot backbone-level network problems, isolating faults and effecting repairs or workarounds
- Familiarity with media types (Cat 3 - Cat 6 UTP, single and multi mode fiber)
- Experience with wireless authentication and access control systems
- Understanding of telecommunications technologies (ISDN, xDSL, T1, VoIP, video, terminal servers, etc.)
- Knowledge of resilient Ethernet solutions using Spanning Tree and Rapid Spanning Tree
- Experience with Unix system administration
- Familiarity with Network Security Devices (Firewalls, IDS/IPS, NAC)
