Research Programmer - Windows Server and Active Directory Administration

Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services Office (CITES) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks to fill one or more full-time Research Programmer positions in its Systems Management Group (SMG). CITES has a growing infrastructure of Windows Server-based services alongside its existing UNIX system environment. The persons selected will provide system administration for Windows servers, as well as domain administration for the campus Active Directory, a CITES service used daily by thousands of faculty/staff and students in over 100 departments. This is an opportunity to use your advanced technical skills in a collaborative, large-scale, multi-vendor computing environment with other talented Windows, UNIX, networking and programming professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Areas of responsibility include:

  • Administration and maintenance of the UIUC Active Directory service.
  • Administration and performance tuning of other Windows-based file, web, and application servers both physical and virtual.
  • Ensuring and maintaining the security of systems.
  • Providing second-level support for AD to IT professionals across campus.
  • Providing outreach education and sharing best practices in areas of Windows technologies, AD and security.

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree and at least one year of relevant experience
  • Windows Server 2003 Active Directory administration experience
  • Windows Server and/or UNIX server administration experience
  • Good communication and customer service skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Strong desire to learn and stay current with new and changing technologies

Desired Qualifications:

  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification preferably at the Windows Server 2003 level
  • Experience in the implementation, administration and/or maintenance of a large-scale Active Directory forest.
  • Experience working with VMWare Infrastructure including VMWare ESX.
  • Experience in a large-scale multi-platform computing environment, with Windows/UNIX system interoperability.
  • Programming experience in a language such as C#, Visual Basic, ASP.NET, Java, PowerShell or other scripts.
  • Experience with the use and deployment of third-party administration tools or development of custom tools.
