Guidelines for the use of Private IP Space (RFC 1918 space) at UIUC

This page contains private IP space policies for the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Definition:

Private IP space is RFC 1918 compliant IP addresses that can be used by anyone, but may not be routed on the Internet. (IP addresses in this range cannot be properly resolved from off campus.) There are 3 address ranges allocated by RFC 1918: 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16.

Departments wishing to use Private IP space on the UIUC campus are requested to follow these conventions:

Notes regarding setting up and using the Private IP space:

192.168.0.0/16 It is entirely up to your unit to set up anything needed to use the 192.168.0.0/16 IP space. Routing between this IP space and your campus assigned IP space still falls under the regular guidelines (ie. you can't without prior approval). CITES will not create separate VLANS in CITES-run switches to route this traffic in your building or around campus, although you can do so if your unit controls the switches in your building. CITES will not help you set up your IP space or DNS services for a net in this IP space.
172.16.0.0/12 CITES is willing (if your unit would like) to route this IP space to campus (including to your unit's other subnets). CITES will create a separate VLAN for your IP space in this range in CITES-run switches. This VLAN can be configured in multiple buildings, just like other campus VLANs. As with any other network, your unit can not route between it and other subnets (including your own) without prior approval.
10.0.0.0/8 Your unit is requested not to use this space, as there may be campus-wide projects in the future that use this space.
