Frequently asked questions about Bluestem Non-NetID (PWF) guest accounts

What is a Bluestem Non-NetID (PWF) guest account?

Bluestem is a Web-based authentication system used to protect access to restricted information in University of Illinois online services.

A Bluestem non-NetID guest account, also known as a PWF, allows access to many Bluestem applications without the network and email privileges associated with a complete NetID.

Illinois Compass is the Bluestem application used most frequently by guests with a PWF account, but many other on-campus Bluestem-secured web applications also accept PWF accounts as an alternative to complete NetIDs or guest NetIDs.

How do you request this type of account?

PWF account creation is managed on an application-by-application basis.

To have a temporary PWF account created for a particular Bluestem-protected application, you'll need to contact the unit that owns the application.

To have a PWF account created for Illinois Compass, contact edtech@uiuc.edu.

What information will you need to provide about your guest(s)?

Certain information is commonly needed:

  • Guest's first name
  • Guest's last name
  • Other information may vary by application (for example, a PWF guest user of Illinois Compass may need to identify the courses he or she is taking)

What other types of guest accounts are available?

The Guide for Hosts and Sponsors lists all the types of guest accounts that are available, including network accounts, computer lab accounts, online coursework access accounts, and more.
