Because a guest NetID allows guests greater access to campus resources, the application process is necessarily more detailed. The following sections explain the procedures to follow in order to request a guest NetID, as well as descriptions of the services provided to your guests once they have received their guest NetIDs.
Requesting a guest NetID
Note: Basic fees for guest NetIDs are $25/month.
This cost covers the items listed in Services
Provided with a Guest NetID.
1. Your guest must have a University Identification Number (UIN) before being given a guest NetID. In order to request a UIN, your department must fill out the Request for UIN Form.
2. Once your department has filled out the request form, your guest
should bring a photo ID to the iCard
Office to receive a UIN.
3. After your guest has received his or her UIN, your department
must fill out a Telephone Service Request (TSR), located at Telephone
Service Requests on the Web.
Note: If you have many users to create at once, contact
the CITES Business Office (1110 DCL, 333-4349) before completing the
TSR. This will allow you to determine the best format in which to exchange the large amount of information about
your guests, in order to complete their NetIDs.
The following information must be included on the TSR:
- Guest's name
- Guest's address
- University Identification Number (UIN)
- Terminate date for account
- Specific services requested: NetID only, dialup,
and/or Express Email account
- Departmental contact
- Departmental contact phone number
4. The request is processed by the CITES Business Office, and
it is then sent to the CITES Help Desk.
5. The Help Desk creates the NetID and will contact you with your guest's NetID information.
Adding optional services to a guest
NetID
Many services are automatically included with a guest NetID.
For a list of automatic services, see Services
Provided with a Guest NetID. Additional services can be arranged for guest NetID
holders and are described below.
Services available without a fee
The following services are available to guest NetID holders without
a fee.
NetFiles storage space
Individuals can enroll at http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/signup 24
hours after the NetID has been created.
Access to NetFiles requires the use of the Active Directory password,
which can be set at the Password
Home Page.
The default quota for NetFiles is 100MB. Increases to this
quota can be requested by contacting the CITES Help Desk.
Access to specific Bluestem
applications
Campus-level web content and applications such as NESSIE and the
Library Gateway are authenticated by the Bluestem Web Sign-on system.
Most campus-wide applications will allow Bluestem access to any
holder of a valid NetID or guest NetID. If you are unable to login to a particular application, that application may have a particular
list of approved users. You may be able to request to be added
to this list by contacting the CITES Help Desk.
- To gain access to a specific application:
Please contact the application owner or department
contact listed for the login page. Be prepared to
provide a business case.
- To determine which Bluestem applications might
be appropriate for your guest:
Please contact the CITES Help Desk at consult@uiuc.edu.
Access to specific Enterprise Authentication Service (EAS) applications
Enterprise-level web content and applications such as Banner Self
Service are authenticated by the Enterprise Authentication
Service (EAS).
Although an EAS account is created automatically
when a NetID is issued, you must request access to specific EAS applications.
- To gain access to a specific application:
Please contact security@uillinois.edu.
Be prepared to provide a business case.
- To determine which EAS-authenticated applications might
be appropriate for your guest:
Please contact helpdesk2@uillinois.edu.
Fee-based services
The following services can be offered to guest NetID holders for a monthly

Microsoft Exchange Email accounts can be requested by departmental
personnel through CITES Departmental Services. The person requesting
the account must be authorized to use the department's Banner Account
number.
Note: A guest must already have a NetID to
receive an Exchange Email account.
Associated costs for these accounts are available at http://exchange-accounts.ad.uiuc.edu/introduction.htm#costs
An online request form is available at http://exchange-accounts.ad.uiuc.edu/introduction.htm#request
Oracle Calendar account
Your departmental Oracle Calendar
coordinator can request new accounts for long-term guests who have
been issued a NetID. The coordinator is
typically a departmental administrative person, but anyone
authorized to use a Banner account is able to request Oracle Calendar
accounts. The cost for an Oracle Calendar account is $2 per month.
Coordinators can contact the CITES Help Desk to create an account
or for more information.
