Overview of CITES Express Email
This page contains information about CITES Express Email, the central campus email system.
CITES Express Email is a campus email service that allows you to receive and manage email through a desktop email client or web interface. The information on this page will give you a brief overview of the service and how it works.
Who can use CITES Express Email?
All incoming students are given a CITES Express Email account before they arrive on campus. Most new staff are also given an account when they begin employment. Some departments, however, provide their staff with departmental accounts (e.g., yourname@law.uiuc.edu), which are separate from CITES Express Email accounts. Talk to your technical support person about whether an Express Email account is appropriate for you.
What does CITES Express Email do?
CITES Express Email allows you to send and receive email through a web interface or a desktop email client. Express Email provides many management options, including mail forwarding, message filtering, vacation auto-responses, and quota monitoring. CITES Express Email also utilizes Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology, which protects the security of your email password.
How much storage space ("quota") does an Express Email account offer?
Students receive a standard Express Email quota of 100 MB, while faculty and staff receive 150 MB.
How long do I get to keep my Express Email account?
You can use your Express Email account for as long as you are affiliated with campus. Students who graduate retain their account access for three months after graduation. Students who leave campus for reasons other than graduation have their account deactivated on the 10th day of the first non-summer academic term for which they do not register for classes. Faculty and staff members have their accounts deactivated 30 days after leaving campus. Retired faculty and staff members retain access to their Express Email accounts as long as they respond to an annual email asking if they wish to keep their account active. For more information, see Leaving the Urbana Campus.
