This page contains information about configuring Eudora (Windows) to access CITES Express Email via the IMAP email protocol.

info Eudora support ending October 31, 2007

Eudora is scheduled to become open-source software on October 31, 2007, and will no longer be supported by the vendor, Qualcomm.

The instructions on these pages should be applicable for Eudora 6 and 7. However, after October 31, the CITES Help Desk will no longer provide Eudora support beyond basic troubleshooting, as described in the Help Desk's Level 2 support definition.

The instructions on this web page will help you configure Eudora 6.2 to access your CITES Express Email account through IMAP. For information about IMAP, see Choosing How to Access Your CITES Express Email Account.

All current faculty, staff, and students can obtain Eudora at no charge from CITES Software WebStore.

1. Open Eudora. If this is your first time using Eudora, the New Account Wizard will open. Click Cancel.

2. Click on Tools on the Eudora Menu Bar.

3. Select Options.

4. The Options window will appear. Fill in the following information:

Real name: Enter your first and last name, or the name that you want your correspondents to see.

Email address: Enter your email address in this form: netid@uiuc.edu. Replace netid with your NetID, which can be found on your I-Card or in your Electronic Directory entry.

Mail Server (Incoming): Enter express.cites.uiuc.edu.

User Name: Enter your NetID in lowercase letters.

SMTP Server (Outgoing): Enter express-smtp.cites.uiuc.edu only if you are on the campus network. If you are connecting from a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP), you must enter the name of its outgoing mail server. Examples of third-party ISPs are Insight, Ameritech, Soltec, Volo, Datatel, DMISI, and Sky Networks, among many others. Contact your ISP if you do not know the name of its outgoing mail server.

Allow authentication: Leave this setting unchecked.

User Name: If the box was not automatically filled in, enter your NetID.

6. In the box next to Check for Mail Every...Minute(s), enter 10.

7. Under Secure Sockets when Receiving, select Required, Alternate Port (if it was not selected automatically).

8. Click on the Incoming Mail icon in the left column of the Options window. For Server configuration, select IMAP.

9. After you select IMAP in the previous step, several additional options will become available:

IMAP mailbox location prefix: Enter INBOX.to make your mail folders display correctly.

For new mail, download: The default setting is minimal headers only. However, you can choose to download full messages, which will allow you to read the messages offline. The drawback to downloading full messages is that your email client will be slower, so you will need to specify in the corresponding box the maximum size of attachments you want to download (in kilobytes).

When I delete a message: Choosing Mark as deleted will simply mark messages you've selected to delete, but leave them in their current location. You can choose to purge the deleted messages later. Alternatively, you can choose Move it to trash (or another folder) so that deleted messages don't clutter your folders, and then periodically empty the Trash folder.

Authentication style: Make sure that Passwords is selected.

10. Click OK.

Eudora is now configured to access your CITES Express Email account using IMAP.
