Overview of EWS Accounts

All students enrolled in an eligible degree program are issued EWS accounts. Eligible degree programs are as follows:

  • All College of Engineering degree programs
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Math CS / Statistics
  • Physics
You will need to activate your EWS account before you can begin using it. For more information, see the Activating Your Account section later in this document.

EWS Labs

EWS labs are located at:

  • 057 Grainger Library
  • 4th Floor Grainger Library (Sun Ray Project)
  • 406B1 and 406B8 Engineering Hall
  • 252 Everitt Lab
  • L426 Digital Computer Lab
  • 1001 and 1009 Mechanical Engineering Lab

The EWS labs contain nearly 300 Unix workstations and 70 Windows workstations, all providing access to numerous engineering applications for laboratory exercises and class assignments. Each lab is staffed by a lab consultant to assist with equipment and software use.

EWS remote servers: Two Sun servers are reserved for remote use. To connect to one of these servers, use any of the following hostnames:

  • remsun.ews.uiuc.edu
  • remsun1.ews.uiuc.edu
  • remsun2.ews.uiuc.edu

Activating Your Account

Your EWS account will use your campus Active Directory password (the same password you use for CITES NetFiles. To check the validity of your EWS account, visit https://www-s.ews.uiuc.edu/password/. You'll be prompted to enter your Network ID (NetID) and NetID password to access this web page. (For more information about what you're NetID is, see "Your NetID".)

If your EWS account is valid, you can then follow the link to the AD Password Change page. We recommend that you choose a password different from your NetID password (this will not cause your NetID password to change). Password changes will take effect within an hour. For more information on choosing passwords, please see the "Guide to Passwords."

Account Policies

Your login and password serve as your identity within the campus computing system and control access to sensitive personal information. Because of the potential for harm, it's very important that you never let anyone else use your account, login, or password — not even your parents, siblings, friends, or roommates. Any sharing is against campus computing policy and could result in losing your account privileges. A complete guide to the University's computing policies is located at: http://www.cio.uiuc.edu/policies.html
