Teaching Software: WebBoard

Accessing WebBoard with Outlook Express (Mac)

This tutorial explains how to configure and use Outlook Express on a Mac.

How to Configure

STEP 1

STEP 3

In the Account Setup Assistant, enter your name and email address, if requested. Click the right arrows at the bottom of the window, until you are asked to provide a News (NNTP) server, then type webboard.cet.uiuc.edu in the box. Finally, check the small box labeled "My news server requires me to log on."

STEP 4

Use the right arrow in the bottom of the window to move through the rest of the set-up process. When you are asked for your account name and password, use your WebBoard login and WebBoard password.

If you are working from your own computer, you can check the Save Password box. Otherwise, you will need to enter your WebBoard password each time that you start a new WebBoard session from Outlook Express. (Do NOT choose this option if you are working from a shared, or public computer.)

STEP 5

When you are asked for an account name, you can call it anything you like. This is how the server will be listed in your Folders window. Click Finish to complete the configuration.

How to Use

STEP 1

Once you have completed the configuration steps above, you should see the WebBoard server listed in your Folders window. It will be listed by the account name that you gave it during configuration.

STEP 2

Control-click on the WebBoard server in your Folders list. From the pop-up menu that opens, click on Get Complete Newsgroup List.

STEP 3

This will open a list of newsgroups that you have access to from WebBoard. If any of your newsgroups are not present on this list, check with your professor for that course. It is possible that the newsgroup access has not been enabled. If you are using WebBoard in more than one class, the newsgroups may show up in one long alphabetical list -- unsorted by course.

STEP 4

Click on the name of each newsgroup that you want to participate in, then click Subscribe.

STEP 5

Now each of these newsgroups will appear in your Folders list on the left side of the window under the WebBoard server name. Clicking on the newsgroup name will give you access to all of the messages posted in the group, as well as the ability to post new messages and reply to posted messages.
