XnView
XnView is an image capture program that can be downloaded for free from http://www.xnview.com. This tutorial will teach you how to use XnView to capture images.
For practice, we will use the University of Illinois logo - the Block I. Open your internet browser and go to http://www.uiuc.edu.
Using XnView
Open XnView and click on the Capture icon in the toolbar.

Select the Window option and choose the window you want to capture from the dropdown menu (which shows all of the windows currently open on your machine). We’re going to capture part of the U of I homepage, so select "University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign."

There should now be a capture of the U of I homepage window in XnView. Click in any area of the picture (remember, it’s a picture now, not a web page) and drag the mouse to form a rectangle around the image you want to capture. Release the mouse.
The image inside the rectangle will become your icon. If you want to change your selection, you can simply create another rectangle by clicking on the image and starting over. You can also resize the rectangle by clicking and dragging any one of the 8 small boxes on the rectangle.
Click the Crop icon in the toolbar to crop your selection.
