Teaching Software: Utilities

Picassa

Another wonderful free piece of software from Google, Picassa is an image manager and editor that gives away powerful features that used to be found only in for-pay software. The now mainstream success of digital photography has brought with it masses of folks who need to manage hundreds, even thousands of digital images and who would like to quickly edit and improve these images (crop, brighten, sharpen, maybe a cool effect here or there). Picassa (similar to, but better than iPhoto on the Mac) is quite simply the answer to these legions of digital photographers. Even expert users of Photoshop will find the ease and speed of working with images in Picassa a temptation. In addition, Picassa offers a smart interface and a sense of fun, with "warmify" and "I'm feeling lucky" being two of the image effect options. Picassa makes it easy to turn one's images into collages, posters, movies, and other goodies. A fundamental improvement on many other image editors, Picassa allows one to edit and alter an image and not have to worry about destroying the integrity of the original shot by failing to save a separate copy of the original picture; with Picassa, one simply edits and plays and exports pictures for the web or prints them and, then, after even dozens of edits and weeks have passed, one simply right clicks on an image and chooses "undo all edits" to return to the original image.
