Requesting an Illinois Compass Course Site
It is important to carefully select the appropriate options for your course site when making your request to ensure that it is set up properly.
Choosing Your Course Site Type
Enter the NetID of the course site owner. The "owner" is defined as the person legally responsible for the content and grade book. This is generally the course instructor.
From the dropdown menu, choose the type of course site you are requesting:
- UIUC Timetable, the default, means the course is in the timetable and has an associated CRN (or multiple CRNs).
- Development courses allow instructors to experiment with Compass, and/or design and develop a course that will serve as a template for a timetable course. These courses will not contain students.
- UIUC Non-Timetable is a catch-all category for courses without associated CRNs.
- University High School course.

Select the start and end semesters. For courses that only last one semester, the start and end term should be the same.

If the course is cross-listed with any other course(s), please indicate this. Later, you will have the opportunity to select the cross-listed sites.
Lastly, you can choose to copy content from an existing course site to your new one. If you are requesting content to be copied from another person's course site, you must have their permission. In these cases, a notice will also be sent to the content owner informing them of the copy-over.

Click Continue.
Copying Content From an Existing Compass Course Site
If you are copying content from an existing site, you will be prompted with a list of sites owned by the owner of the new site, not the requestor. Choose the course site you wish to copy.

If the list does not include the site you are looking for, you can search for it in the form below by owner, rubric, or rubric and section. The search results will then be added to the list.
Once you have chosen the site to copy, click Continue.
Selecting Your Sections
Next, you will be presented with a list of timetable sections associated with the owner’s NetID. From that, choose all of the sections that you wish to include in the course site. If the course is cross-listed, be sure to include the cross-listed sections as well.
NOTE: If the course contains a lecture with multiple discussion sections, you may wish to request only the discussion sections and omit the lecture. This allows the grade book to display the specific discussion section for each student, as opposed to the same lecture section for every student.
If the sections you need do not appear in the list – or if no sections appear in the list – use the search form to find the necessary course. The search results will then be added to the list.
After choosing sections for your course, click Continue.

Editing the Course Title and Additional Comments
You will be given the opportunity to edit the title of your course site. However, because the request tool automatically pulls the title from the timetable, in most cases it will not need to be altered.
You may also provide additional comments or information, including special instructions for the creation of your course site or contact information.
Click Continue.
Adding Additional Users and Completing Your Request
Next, you are given the opportunity to add additional users to your course site and assign their "roles." Each role corresponds to a level of access within a Compass course site:
- Instructor/Designers have the highest level of access. They have access to both the Build and Teach tabs – they have full access to the grade book and can create/add content and interact with students.
- Instructors have full access to the Teach tab and grade book, but their ability to add/create content is limited to discussion boards and announcements.
- Designers have access to the Build tab, and are able to create and add content, but have no access to the grade book and cannot interact with students.
- TA/Designers have the same access as Designers, plus limited access to the Teach tab. They have full access to the grade book, but are not allowed to import or export spreadsheets.
- TA/Graders are granted access to the grade book, but are not allowed to import or export spreadsheets.
NOTE: This tool is not for adding students.
Click Continue.
You will be given the opportunity to review all of the information and double-check it for accuracy. Finally, read the terms of use for Illinois Compass course sites. You must click the check box and agree to the terms in order to receive a Compass site.

Click Confirm.
Once you confirm your request, the information will be presented again, along with a Request Tracking Number. Make a note of this number, as it will enable CITES EdTech to locate and track your request, should you have any questions or problems.
