Deepening Intellectual Communities: Lessons from a Classroom Blog
Barbara Ganley (Middlebury College)
Looking inside one professor’s five-year experience with group and individual blogging offers valuable insights into the effects of the unique combination of the transparency, flexibility, interactivity and connectivity of blogs on intellectual engagement, networking and collaborative work. During this conversation/presentation with Barbara Ganley of Middlebury College’s Writing Program and English Department, we examined the growth of a dynamic learning community adopting a central blog as ever-evolving virtual commons augmented by individual blogging practices. We explored the ways in which active online conversation within our intellectual communities can deepen the group’s bonds and creative thinking while developing a culture of networked collective intelligence.
