Deepening Intellectual Communities: Lessons from a Classroom Blog
Wednesday, November 1, 2006
12:30 P.M. ~ 1:50 P.M.
126 Library and Information Science Building (LIS)
Looking inside one professor’s five-year experience with group and individual blogging offers valuable insights into the effects of the unique combination of the transparency, flexibility, interactivity and connectivity of blogs on intellectual engagement, networking and collaborative work. During this conversation/presentation with Barbara Ganley of Middlebury College’s Writing Program and English Department, we will examine the growth of a dynamic learning community adopting a central blog as ever-evolving virtual commons augmented by individual blogging practices. We will explore the ways in which active online conversation within our intellectual communities can deepen the group’s bonds and creative thinking while developing a culture of networked collective intelligence.
Highlights
The Economist, one of the oldest (continuously published since 1843) news and affairs publications in the world, recently began offering podcasts, including two outstanding interviews that discuss the ways in which blogs and wikis are changing media and society. "Wide World of Wikis: A Discussion with Jerry Michalski, founder and president of Sociate" discusses how the simpler, cheaper technology of wikis is actually better for employee collaboration than the costly information management systems that companies and institutions have developed over the years to facilitate and improve information sharing and collaboration. "Blogs as Leading Indicators: A Discussion with David Sifry, Founder and CEO, Technrati" explores how blogs are connecting companies with experts, hobbyists, and narrow, but highly enthusiastic, demographic slices of their audience and customers, a result that suggests profound implications for business, media, and education.
