Research Programmer Position

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks an experienced and creative individual for a regular, full-time (12-month) position as a Research Programmer in the Educational Technologies division of Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES). The Research Programmer will work closely with the CITES enterprise-wide Learning Management System.

Detailed Description:

  • Implementation, modification, and customization of CITES enterprise-wide Learning Management System.
  • Develop tools for internal workflow management, database integration, reporting and collaboration.
  • Work with the Webmaster to develop and support dynamic parts of the CITES EdTech website.
  • Develop project strategies, requirements, plans, and timelines for service development and integration projects.
  • Development and implementation of utilities and tools that complement the enterprise learning management system; providing support and enhancements for existing tools with Java, Object-oriented Perl/CGI, or JavaScript on Unix servers for interactive web-based learning.
  • Interact with EdTech staff who provide faculty client support for the Learning Management System.
  • Interact with EdTech and CITES staff who manage and maintain servers and services.
  • Work as part of a team or, where appropriate, independently to complete technical development and integration projects that are based on agreed specifications, timelines, and milestones.
  • Maintain technical currency both in general and in particular areas of expertise that are relevant to current and future educational technology directions.
  • Other duties as assigned—may include support of other EdTech offerings, work on cross-departmental projects

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in computer science or related field) and two years of relevant experience
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one object-oriented programming language (Java strongly desired)
  • Understanding of modular software design practices
  • Familiarity with web programming concepts (sessions, cookies, authentication)
  • Development experience in a UNIX environment
  • Experience with a RDBMS system (Oracle a strong plus)
  • Experience with HTML, XML, CGI, and SQL
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work productively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Specific knowledge of WebCT Vista, Apache, Tomcat, Eclipse
  • Additional education/experience
  • Experience with programming educational technology applications
  • Experience working in an academic environment
  • Desire to understand educational processes and how technology impacts learning

 

Salary:

The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
