UIUC DNS Server IP addresses

  • 128.174.5.58 (argus.cso.uiuc.edu)
  • 128.174.5.102 (cyclops.cso.uiuc.edu)

If you are located on campus, do NOT use 128.174.5.103 (dns1.cso.uiuc.edu), 128.174.5.104 (dns2.cso.uiuc.edu), or 134.68.220.9 (dns1.iu.edu, Indiana University's name server), as these will not provide you the service you expect. The DNS map gives a graphical representation of how the campus DNS machines interact with the outside world and campus machines.

UIUCnet IP address ranges

There are several IP address ranges reserved for use by UIUCnet computers and network devices. DNS information about most of them is distributed to the Internet; however, if you want a simple way to keep a computer's access restricted to only UIUCnet computers, a private IP address range only visible from other UIUCnet systems is also available. For more information, see On-campus IP ranges.

Host Registration

To register/delete/rename a machine, please use the host registration web page.
https://www-dns.cites.uiuc.edu/hostreg/

Use the CNAME registration web page to register a CNAME (alias) to an existing host:
https://www-dns.cites.uiuc.edu/hostreg/cname.cgi

For complicated moves, cname requests, MX, adds, etc please contact hostmgr@uiuc.edu directly.

Customer Specific Domains

Your group or organization is not limited to the domains that the University already has defined. We are able to host domains that fit the University mission. If you are wanting a sub-domain off of uiuc.edu or uillinois.edu, please follow this link for more information: Customer Specific Domains (domain.uiuc.edu or domain.uillinois.edu)

The University can also host new domains. To see if the domain you want is available, you can go to the Network Solutions home page. Please do not request the domain from Network Solutions or any other domain granting insitutuion. The University hostmgr must be involved in the requesting of the domain in order for our DNS servers to provide the service. Please follow this link for more information on obtaining non-uiuc.edu or non-uillinois.edu domains: Personalized Domains (non uiuc.edu/uillinois.edu)

Tools

Network Admins can now keep our Contacts database up to date using the following web site: Contact Manager

Also, several DNS-related tools for network administrators are available at http://www-dns.cites.uiuc.edu/dnstools/.

These include:

  • Data file viewing: A web interface allowing network administrators to
view and download the contents of the UIUC DNS record files.
  • Graphical IP space viewing: A table-based representation of network and
subnetwork use on the UIUC campus.
  • Web DNS lookup: A web-based alternative to the Unix nslookup command.
The online form searches by host name, IP address, domain, and network.
  • Domain request forms: Forms for use when requesting customer-specific domains.

Additional tools may also be added.

Acceptable Use policy:

Any computer that uses any domain name or IP address space managed by or associated with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign must conform to the "Policy on Appropriate Use of Computers and Network Systems at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign" (also known as the "UIUC Acceptable Use Policy").

DNS backups: Indiana University backup name server change

In February 2004, Indiana University changed the address of the machine used for UIUC DNS information.

When Indiana made their change, 129.79.5.100 (whose host name is ns2.indiana.edu) became their internal DNS nameserver and reachable only from Indiana University. Due to this change, CITES requests any computers on campus still using 129.79.5.100 as a DNS server should remove the entry as soon as possible.

If you are running the DNS for your department/unit, please contact hostmgr@uiuc.edu for the changes you should make to your DNS files.
