Windows XP dialup configuration details

CITES > dialup > WinXP > configuration

On this page:

This page provides more configuration information than the Quick Start, including directions for manually configuring your DNS and WINS server information if the dialup connection has difficulty auto-detecting it. A printable Adobe PDF version is also available.

What you'll need to know

Some things you'll need to know to configure your Windows XP machine to connect to campus dialup services include:

  • Do you know your Network ID and Network ID password?
You use your NetID and NetID password to connect to UIUCnet Premier and/or UIUCnet Dialup. For more information about your NetID, see Your Network ID.

  • Has your modem been installed yet?
Under Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, click on the Modems icon. If you don't see your modem listed, look here for modem installation directions.

  • Which service are you using?
You'll need to choose which phone number you dial based on which dialup service you're using.

Dialup phone numbers

The following numbers are used for dialup access to the UIUC network:

Speed Access Phone Number
56Kb/s V.90/Kflex Premier subscribers only 239-7252
56Kb/s V.90/Kflex available to all authorized users 333-3700
56Kb/s V.90/Kflex available to all authorized users, limit of 15 minutes per call 244-4976

On campus users: If you’re calling from on campus, add a 9 before the telephone number.

If all the restricted-use phone lines are busy, they will automatically redirect into the 333-3700 (all users) pool. If all 333-3700 lines are also busy, you will receive a busy signal. (The exception is the Premier service, which is designed not to have busy signals. If you receive a busy signal from the Premier line, contact the Operations Center.)

Configuring Windows XP to connect to UIUCnet Dialup services

From the Start menu, select Control Panel. When the Control Panel window opens, double-click Network Connections. In the window that appears, look at the "Network Tasks" panel and select "Create a new connection."

New connection wizard

The New Connection Wizard window will appear. Click Next. When prompted for your "Network Connection Type", select Connect to the Internet and click Next again.

The third screen is titled Getting Ready. Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.

The fourth screen is titled Internet Connection. Select Connect using a dialup modem and click Next.

This produces the Connection Name window. We recommend using a name that is easy to remember. For example:

ISP Name: UIUC Dialup

Again, click Next. The sixth screen prompts you for the phone number to dial.

Phone number to dial: Enter the phone number you wish to use from the list of available phone numbers:

Speed Access Phone Number
56Kb/s V.90/Kflex Premier subscribers only 239-7252
56Kb/s V.90/Kflex available to all authorized users 333-3700
56Kb/s V.90/Kflex available to all authorized users, limit of 15 minutes per call 244-4976

333-3700 is the general line which is available to all UIUC users, but if you qualify for one of the more limited access lines, you may want to use that number first.

If you are dialing from a location on campus, or somewhere else which requires 9 to get to an outside line, add 9, to the beginning of your phone number (for example, 9,333-3700).

On campus users: If you’re calling from on campus, add a 9 before the telephone number.

Click Next.

The seventh window asks whether this connection should be available to all users on this machine or not.

If you are the only person who uses this machine, we recommend selecting "My use only." People who log into a guest account on this machine will not see this dialup selection as an option.

If you share this machine with other UIUC users such as a roommate or officemate, we recommend selecting "Anyone's use." In this case, other users who log in will have the UIUC dialup option available to them under their Networking settings. They will not automatically have access to your account; that is set in another screen, and we recommend that you NOT share your account information.

Note that simply making the UIUC dialup icon available is not the same as allowing another person to log in with your Network ID and password. Each user on this machine should use his or her own Network ID and password, and we do not recommend saving your passwords on the system.

The Connection Availability option simply changes what to display or hide on different users' Windows desktops and network settings, and it allows other users with other UIUC Network IDs to make their own individual connections to UIUC.

Again, click Next.

This produces the Internet Account Information window:

We recommend you use the following settings:

  • User name: Give your Network ID.

  • Password: Give your Network ID password.

  • Confirm password: Type your password again.

  • Do NOT check "Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer," or else your password will be stored on the computer and anyone can log into your account. (This is NOT the same as making the dialup icon available to other users, as explained above.)

  • If this will be the network connection you use most often, you can check "Make this your default Internet connection"; otherwise, leave the box unchecked.

  • The choice of whether or not to use the Internet Connection Firewall option is left to you. However, if you encounter difficulties connecting with it enabled, turn the option off.

Click Next.

This produces the final wizard window. You can check the box if you want to create a desktop shortcut for this connection, or leave it unchecked if you don't want a desktop shortcut.

Go back to the Network Connections window; there will be a new icon for UIUC Dialup.

Right-click on this icon and select Properties. This produces the Properties window.

Network configuration properties (optional)

Note: In most cases, you shouldn't need to manually assign the DNS server addresses; your computer should automatically detect them. For that reason, this step was not documented in the short version. However, if you've experienced problems connecting with the quick configuration, you can add the following information to your dialup configuration.

Click the Network tab in the Properties window you opened in the last step. Under "This connection uses the following options", make sure that at least Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is selected.

Click on the Internet Protocol item name so that it is highlighted as shown in the illustration. (Make sure the check box is still checked.) Then click the Properties button to produce the following window:

In the top half of the window, select "Obtain IP address automatically." This allows the dialup system to temporarily assign an IP address in the UIUC range to your computer.

You can also obtain the DNS server information automatically if you wish. If so, make sure "Obtain DNS server information automatically" is selected, click OK until you return to the desktop, and skip down to "Starting a session" below.

Since the DNS information does not bring the WINS information with it automatically, and you may wish to specify WINS information to connect to Windows Network Neighborhood Resources, you can also provide DNS and WINS information as follows:

In the bottom half of the window, select "Use the following DNS server addresses," and enter the following IP addresses:

128.174.5.58 Primary DNS server
128.174.5.102 Secondary DNS server

(The window will want the dotted numbers rather than the descriptions.)

Click the Advanced button to configure WINS information. The Advanced TCP/IP Settings window that opens will show the General tab. Click the WINS tab and you will see:

Advanced TCP/IP Properties, WINS configuration tab

Click the Add button, and add the dotted numbers from the following list:

128.174.5.30 Primary WINS server
128.174.5.31 Secondary WINS server

Click OK in the open windows.

Now that you've finished configuration, you'll want to start your dialup session.

Starting a session

The initial configuration (above) needs to be done only once. This section, however, will be done whenever you connect to the dialup servers.

First, plug a phone line into your modem and into an analog phone jack in the wall.

If you created a desktop UIUC icon, double-click it; otherwise, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections (which opens this window) and double-click your UIUC icon there. (You can also create a shortcut on the desktop by dragging and dropping the dialup icon onto the desktop.)

You will see the following window:

Enter your user name and password, and do NOT check the "save password" option.

Once you've seen the dialing and connecting windows pass by, a small network icon (two computers) will appear in the lower right area of your task bar. Whenever their screens light up, information is being transmitted over the active connection. At this point, you're connected and can check email or web-browse.

When you've finished with your networking session, click the network icon (two computers) in the lower right corner of the screen. It will open a networking details window in the middle of the screen. You can choose to disconnect from here.
