What you'll need to know

Some things you'll need to know to configure your machine for dialup access include:

  • Do you know your Network ID and Network ID password?
You use your NetID and NetID password to connect to UIUCnet Premier and/or UIUCnet Dialup. For more information about your NetID, see Your Network ID.

  • Has your modem been installed yet?
Under Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center (the top center button) > Manage network connections (in the list on the left), look for your modem.

If it's not shown, you'll need to install it before continuing. See the manufacturer's directions for Vista-specific instructions.

  • Which service are you using?
You'll need to choose which phone number you dial based on which dialup service you're using.

Dialup numbers for UIUC modem pools:

    Speed Access Phone Number
    56Kb/s V.90/Kflex Premier subscribers only 239-7252
56Kb/s V.90/Kflex available to all authorized users 333-3700
56Kb/s V.90/Kflex available to all authorized users, limit of 15 minutes per call 244-4976
On campus users: If you’re calling from on campus, add a 9 before the telephone number.

Configuring your connection

To configure your computer to connect to UIUCnet Premier or UIUCnet Dialup:

  1. Click on the Start menu in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. (In Vista, this is identified with a Windows image rather than the word Start used in previous Windows operating systems.)

  2. Select Control Panel from the right hand side of the menu.

  3. Locate the section that says Network and Internet. Directly below that, you will see Connect to the Internet. Click on Connect to the Internet.

    • Note: It is possible that you may not find "Network and Internet" if your Control Panel is using the "classic" view. You can identify which view you are in by looking at the upper left of this window. There will be a white arrow pointing next to the mode you are in. Make sure it is set to "Control Panel Home."

  4. A new window will ask how you want to connect to the Internet (generally either by broadband or dialup.) Select Dialup.

  5. In the next screen, enter your connection information:
    • Phone Number: 333-3700

    • User: Your NetID (without the @uiuc.edu)

    • Password: Although you can enter your Network ID password in the Password field, CITES recommends that you leave this field blank and enter the password when you dial. (Entering the password when you dial is more secure.)

    • There will be a check box asking if you want to store your password. CITES recommends leaving this box unchecked.

    • Connection Name: UIUCnet Dialup

  6. Once you've entered your configuration information, click Connect.

If all your information is correct and your phone cable is correctly attached on both ends, your computer will begin dialing the University modems to make a connection.

Dialing in

To connect again in the future:

  1. Make sure your phone cable is attached to your computer and to a phone jack.
  2. Click on the Start menu in the bottom left of the screen.
  3. Select Connect To from the right side of the menu.
  4. Select UIUCnet Dialup from the list of options shown.
