Some things you'll need to know to configure your machine for dialup access include:
Do you know your Network ID and Network ID password?
You use your NetID and NetID password to connect to UIUCnet Premier and/or UIUCnet Dialup. For more information about your NetID, see Your Network ID.
Has your modem been installed yet?
Under Start -> Settings -> Control Panel,
click on the Modems icon. If you don't see your modem listed,
look here for modem installation directions.
Which service are you using? You'll need to choose which phone number you dial based on which dialup service you're using.

The dialup wizard
To configure your computer to connect to UIUCnet Premier or UIUCnet Dialup:
Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Network and Dial-up Connections.
Double-click on Make New Connection. This produces the Network Connection Wizard.
Name your connection UIUCnet Premier (or UIUCnet Dialup).
Select your modem from the drop-list of available modem definitions.
Click Next.
Enter 217 in the area code field.
Enter 239-7252 (or your chosen modem number) in the phone number field.
Select United States of America (1) in the country or region code field.
Click Next.
You're now finished with the dialup wizard. Click Finish.
Dialing in
To connect to the network, make sure your modem's phone cable is connected at both ends, then double-click on the UIUCnet Premier icon (or the UIUCnet Dialup icon) in the Network and Dial-up Connections window. A connection window will appear.
Enter your Network ID password and click Connect.
When you're finished using your dialup connection, right-click on the network icon (two computer screens) in the task bar and select Disconnect.
More than one network connection?
If you have more than one network connection installed, Windows ME will likely try to make your new dialup configuration the default network connection. It may also try to dial in even when you have an Ethernet or wireless network connection already established.
If you're plugged into an Ethernet connection, and starting a browser
window creates a prompt for you to connect with your dialup connection,
instead of using the already-active Ethernet:
Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Dial-Up Networking and right-click on your new default connection (which will have a blue circle with a white checkmark on its icon).
From the right-click menu, select Properties, then select the Dialing tab.
When you first look at the Dialing tab of your default connection, the "This is the default Internet connection" check box will be selected and "Always dial my default connection" will be selected.
If you prefer to use an Ethernet connection as your default, select the "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" radio button and remove the check box from "This is the default Internet connection". Click OK.
If you prefer to use a different dialup connection as default, first remove the check box from "This is the default Internet connection". Then click OK and return to the dialup networking window.
Next, right-click on the icon of your preferred dialup connection, select Properties, and go to its Dialing tab. Put a check in the "This is the default Internet connection" check box.
More information
If you have any difficulty connecting to the network using this quick-start process, use the more detailed installation process (including specifying DNS and WINS server addresses to enable Microsoft networking over dialup).
