What you'll need in order to connect
- A Windows XP or 2000 computer with a modem
- Your personal access number (provided to you with the paperwork for the UIUC 800 number application)
- The UIUC 800 number: 1-800-782-4800
- The UIUC dialup modem numbers:
- 239-7252 for Premier users (designed not to have busy signals)
or
- 333-3700 for free dialup (busy signals likely at high-demand times)
- A working dialup configuration which allows you to connect to either Premier or free dialup from within the 217 area code (see the note below for more information).
Note: If you haven't yet configured your system for regular dial-up networking to campus (without the 800 number), you should make sure that part of your configuration is working first. See Windows XP Dialup Networking or Windows 2000 Dialup Networking for instructions.
Configuring your system to connect to campus modems through an 800 number
For most users, 800 number access to campus dialup pools is a special case rather than the everyday method of making a network connection. There's also no need to use 800 number access from within the 217 area code. Therefore, we'll be defining a "travel" location that is outside the 217 area code and a special "UIUC 800" calling card in your calling rules.
After you've created your regular dialup configuration as noted above, you can modify that configuration's calling rules to add your "Travel" location and define the custom calling card for your 800-number access.
In your Network and Dialup Connections window (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Network and Dialup Connections), right-click on the icon for the dialup connection you want to use with the 800 number and select Properties.

Dialing Properties
A new window with 5 tabs will appear:

In order for the 800 number rule to be correctly applied, you must have more than one location defined. Assuming that your computer already contains a location defined as "home" or "work" or something similar, we'll now create a new travel-specific "location" outside the 217 area code.
In the Area Code field, make sure 217 is entered and that you've entered the phone number for the modem pool you wish to use. (333-3700, the general pool, is shown; 239-7252 for the Premier pool is also an option.)
Beneath the numbers, make sure Use dialing rules is checked. Then click the Rules button.
Dialing Rules: General tab
In the Dialing Rules window which appears, click the New button to define a location called UIUC 800. ("UIUC 800" is the location you will use whenever you are calling from a place where you want to use the UIUC 800 number to connect.)

In the Country/region field, select United States of America (since the 800 number is only useful within the US).
In the Area Code field, provide a non-217 area code (712 is used in the sample, but any other non-217 area code could also be used).
What you type in the Dialing rules box will depend on the specific location you're at. For the moment, set it up to match the location you'll be running your first dialing test from.
- If you're testing at home or at a location which doesn't require extra numbers to be dialed, leave the "To access an outside line..." boxes blank.
- If you're testing from on campus, place a 9 in both of the "To access an outside line..." boxes.
That's all you need to configure in this tab.
Dialing rules: Area code rules - leave blank
The next tab, Area code rules, can be left blank if you intend to use the UIUC 800 number for calling the UIUC modems whenever you're not in the 217 area code.
Dialing rules: Calling card
In the third tab, Calling Card, you'll be treating the UIUC 800 number and its access number as though it were a customized calling card with a PIN (personal identification number).
First, click the New button. In the window which appears, give the new calling card a name like UIUC 800 number.

Leave the Account Number line blank; we won't need it for this configuration.
Type your own personal access number in the Personal Identification Number (PIN) field (given as 555555555 in the example). This number is assigned only to you. All other numbers shown will be the same, but this one uniquely identifies you, like your NetID.
(Note: The 1-800-782-4800 number is NOT your PIN. Your PIN is the nine-digit code provided with your paperwork.)
WARNING: Take care to safeguard this number, and don't type it or view it when strangers could be looking over your shoulder; your personal account will be charged with any access fees incurred with this PIN.
Edit calling card - Long Distance tab
Next, click the Long Distance tab. It will be blank to begin with; you'll complete it to look like the following screen shot.

In the access number field, type 1 800 782 4800
Next, to provide the calling card steps:
- Click the Access Number button.
- Click Wait for a Prompt.
In the window which appears, select Wait for Dial Tone and click OK.
- Click the PIN button.
- Click Wait for Prompt again.
Again, select Wait for Dial Tone and OK.
- Click Specify Digits and tell it to dial 9.
- Click Wait for Prompt.
This time, select Wait for a specific length of time and select 2 seconds.
- Click Destination Number.
Make sure that "Dial the area code" is NOT selected. Your selections should match this screen shot.
(Since you're already in the UIUC phone system by the time you've gotten to this point in the dialing sequence, you shouldn't redial the area code; you should only dial the number for the modem line you're using.)
Click OK.
At this point, your configuration should look like the screen shot shown above.
Since you won't be using the 800 number for international or local calls, you can skip those tabs.
Click OK in the Long Distance tab (shown above).
This will return you to the list of calling cards, with your newly created UIUC 800 number entry highlighted. Click OK again.
Checking your new location and dialing rules
Now you should be back to your list of locations in the Dialing Rules tab:

Check your configuration. There should be a new UIUC 800 location defined and highlighted.
The Phone number will be dialed as sequence at the bottom should look like this, with **** shown to represent your PIN:
- For Premier: 1 800 782 4800 **** 9 239-7252
- For the free dialup line: 1 800 782 4800 **** 9 333-3700
If your dialing configuration matches this, click OK. (If you're planning to dial test from on campus, there will be a 9 in front of the string.)
If your configuration doesn't match this, click Edit and recheck the screen shots above to make sure that everything matches.
At this point, you're ready to run a dialing test. Make sure your modem is plugged into a phone line and double-click the icon for the UIUC dialup connection you plan to use. Give your Network ID and Network ID password and see whether you can connect.
Returning from the trip and customizing for other locations
When you've returned from your trip and want to use your regular method of dialing in to UIUCnet Premier or Dialup, simply return to the Dialing Rules tab by right-clicking on your UIUCnet Premier (or Dialup) icon and selecting Properties.
In the Properties window, click the Dialing Rules button. You'll return to the Dialing Rules window shown above.
Select your regular location ("home" or "work" in the example above). The "Phone number will be dialed as" option will return to its usual configuration.
Similarly, you can later turn the UIUC 800 number back on by selecting the UIUC 800 location from this list.
Other options
The descriptions presented above assume that you will begin your dialing string either directly with the UIUC 1-800 number or with 9-1-800. However, some locations require other calling sequences -- for example, some hotels require you to dial 8 before the 1-800 number; others use 109 or a different number entirely.
Check with the hotel or office you're calling from in order to determine the correct sequence of numbers to be dialed before the UIUC 1-800 number at that particular location.
Note also that the UIUC 1-800 number is only useful within the United States; if calling from a foreign country, you'll need to dial a different sequence of numbers, and your modem may or may not be able to communicate with their phone lines. For more information about modem dialup from international locations, see Network Access for Travelers.
