Guide to Computer Facilities

CITES > computer facilities

There are many places on campus where students, staff, and faculty can go to use computers and related equipment or hook up a laptop. This guide offers brief descriptions and links to further information on some of the major facilities that are available.

The UIUC Office for Planning, Design & Construction maintains a list of ADA Accessibility Information for the campus, which contains links to maps of some of the buildings in which CITES computer facilities are housed. DRES also has a comprehensive list of Universal Access Resources for Information Technology, which includes pointers to information on public instructional computer lab accessibility, library computer lab accessibility, and locations of assistive technology hardware and software on campus.

Which Facility Is for You? Quick Web Links
All students and faculty/staff
  • Instructional Computing Services (ICS): At several locations around campus, you will find facilities, staffed by on-site consultants, that offer you current software, hardware, and audio-visual equipment.
  • Walkup Computing: CITES provides equipment for you to connect your laptop to the campus network in a few locations around campus. (These facilities are not to be confused with the "walkups" in the Illini Union and other places around campus that offer limited-function email and browser stations.)

Residents of University Residence Halls (URH)
  • Residence Halls Computer Centers: Residence hall computer centers are operated by University Housing and financially supported through contracts with residents. The centers, located in most housing units, differ considerably from each other in size and number of computers but all workstations are configured the same from one site to another.
College of Engineering students
  • Engineering Work Station Labs: These facilities have Unix and NT workstations for instructional computing activities at various locations on the Engineering campus. The EWS Labs are not intended for research computing.
