Guidelines for use of University of Illinois Cellular Telephone Service
- Personal calls are not allowed with University cellular telephones.
- Calls to home should not be made from cellular telephones when in Champaign-Urbana.
- Cellular telephone numbers should not be given to parties not affiliated with the University and/or University business. (Exception: family members, ONLY for use in emergency situations)
- 800 toll free and 900 calls must be for University business only.
- Use of Directory Assistance (411, xxx-555-1212) should be minimal. A "business" directory should be created for use with the cellular telephone
- If for some reason personal calls are made with a University cellular telephone, please contact your Department Business Manager to pay for the personal call(s).
- Generally, employees who find it necessary to use their personal cellular telephone for University business must do so at their own expense. However, if employees believe the University should pay for these calls, the employee must obtain prior approval from their department before making the call(s).
- Monthly service charges are not reimbursable; only the airtime, applicable roaming charges, or long distance charges of the approved call(s) may be reimbursed. Airtime should be reimbursed at the current State rate.

In the event that a University cellular phone is lost or stolen, it must be reported to the police department right away. It must also be reported to CITES Communications Customer Service at 333-1161 immediately, to have service suspended. A copy of the Police report or the report number must be provided to Communications Customer Service.
University Policy :
- Note: As of 2007, use of hand-held, hands-free or other mobile electronic devices by University vehicle or equipment operators is prohibited, unless the vehicle is out of the traffic right-of-way and engaged in park or neutral and not moving. Safety Precaution:
- Exercise extreme caution when using a cellular phone while driving personal vehicles. If it is necessary to use the cellular phone while driving a personal vehicle, use a “Hands-Free” kit.
