Installing Oracle Connector for Outlook

Oracle Connector for Outlook integrates the functionality of Oracle's real-time calendaring with Outlook's familiar interface.

While Oracle Connector for Outlook is site licensed and available at not charge to Urbana campus faculty, staff, and students, CITES does not provide users with local consulting help. Oracle Connector for Outlook is fully supported by Oracle Corporation.

 

System requirements

Operating system: Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP Professional

Note: You must have administrative privileges on your machine to install Oracle Connector for Outlook on Windows NT, 2000, and XP.

Microsoft Outlook: Outlook 98, Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002, or Outlook 2003

Conduits for PDA synchronization: PocketMirror 2.0.4 or 3.0 (3.0 is recommended), PocketJournal, Desktop To Go 2.5, Desktop To Go 2.509 (for Outlook 2002 only), PSIWIN 2.3 or 2.31, ActiveSync 3.0, 3.1 or 3.5, or HotSync Manager 4.0 (for Windows XP only)

 

Creating backups of Outlook Files

Before installing the connector, back up your Outlook files. If the installation process damages any files, you can easily restore them using this backup. To create a backup of your files:

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click File -> Import and Export...
  3. From the list, choose Export to a file, and then click Next.
  4. Choose Personal Folder File (.pst), and then click Next.
  5. Select Personal Folders or Outlook Today from the list.
  6. Check the box next to Include subfolders, and then click Next.
  7. Click Browse. In the Open Personal Folders dialog box that opens:
    • Choose Desktop in the drop-down list next to Save in.
    • Next to File name, type a name for your file.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Beneath Options, choose Replace duplicates with items exported.
  10. Click Finish.
  11. In the Create Microsoft Personal Folders dialog box that appears, type Copy of Personal Folders next to Name, and choose No Encryption beneath Encryption Setting.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Depending on the size and quantity of your files, it could take several minutes to create the backup.
  14. Once the backup is created, open the file to ensure that it was created successfully by opening Outlook and clicking File -> Open -> Outlook Data File.
  15. In the Open Outlook Data File dialog box that opens, choose Desktop from the Look in drop-down list.
  16. Select your file, and then click OK.
  17. A folder called Copy of Personal Folders (or whatever name you entered in step 11) will open in your Outlook folder list.
  18. Expand the folder to check that your files copied correctly. If they did, you are ready to install Oracle Connector for Outlook.

Installing Oracle Connector for Outlook

Exit all Windows applications before starting the Oracle Connector for Outlook installation process.

Note: Outlook 98 and 2000 must be installed in Corporate/ Workgroup mode. Verify your Outlook configuration before installing Oracle Connector for Outlook. See the following for more information:

     

  1. Create a temporary folder on your desktop named calendar.
    • To create a new folder, right-click on the desktop, choose New -> Folder from the shortcut menu that appears. Type a name for the folder, and press the Enter key.
  2. Extract the con_outlook_90428.zip file that you downloaded from the Software WebStore.
    • In the Open File dialog box that appears, click Run.
    • When the WinZip Self-Extractor opens, click Browse.
    • Select the calendar folder you created on the desktop, and then click Unzip.
    • A dialog box will appear when the files have been extracted. Click OK.
    • Click Close to exit WinZip Self-Extractor.
  3. Open the calendar folder on your desktop, and then double-click on the con_outlook_90428 file.
  4. Choose Yes to continue installing Oracle Connector for Outlook.
    The installation wizard opens.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Enter your name and company, and then click Next.
  7. Click Next to let the software install to its default location.
  8. Select additional languages you wish to install (if any), and then click Next.
  9. Click Next to begin installation.
    When the setup is complete, the Profiles window automatically opens.
  10. Quit the wizard by clicking Cancel -> Exit Setup.
  11. Configure Outlook for your version of Outlook:
  12. Delete the calendar folder on your desktop.
