|
If you are leaving the Urbana campus, access to email and UIUC network services (e.g., dialup, instructional computing sites) may still be available to you depending on your circumstances.
Students Leaving UIUC
Note: CITES system maintenance schedules may allow an account to remain active somewhat longer than the above- stated guidelines; do not assume that your account will remain active if it has not been deactivated by the given deadline. In addition, keep in mind that violations of University policies regarding computing access may result in the immediate deactivation of your account. Staff Leaving UIUC

| Your campus email
account will remain active; you will be asked annually if you
wish to renew the account.
Your option to forward email from your campus email address to a different email account will also remain active. Instructions for using the Electronic Directory forwarding service can be found below under Forwarding Email. |
If you are no longer on the Urbana campus payroll, your campus email account and other network services will be discontinued within 30 days after you leave. CITES will send a notice to your netid@uiuc.edu email address 7 days before your email account is deactivated. After deactivation, your account will no longer accept incoming mail; you may forward new email from your campus email address to a different email account, using the Electronic Directory, for one year so that you have the opportunity to inform your correspondents of your new email address. Instructions for using the Electronic Directory forwarding service can be found below under Forwarding Email. |
| Your UIUC Electronic Directory entry will remain listed, indicating your status as retired. | Your UIUC Electronic Directory entry will remain active for one year after your departure date. |
| If you have a CITES NetFiles account, you'll need to obtain authorization from a campus department head to keep the account active. As with your email account, you will be asked annually whether you wish to renew the NetFiles account; no additional departmental approval will be needed, however, once initial approval has been granted. | If you have a CITES NetFiles account, the account will be discontinued within 30 days after you leave. It is recommended that you transfer any files or web pages stored on your account before you leave. (See Discontinuation of your NetFiles account means:, below.) |
* If you are a faculty or staff member on disability leave, please contact the CITES Help Desk (consult@uiuc.edu or (217) 244-7000) to determine what services may still be available to you.
Note: CITES system maintenance schedules may allow an account to remain active somewhat longer than the above-stated guidelines; do not assume that your account will remain active if it has not been deactivated by the given deadline. In addition, keep in mind that violations of University policies regarding computing access may result in the immediate deactivation of your account.
Discontinuation of your network access means:
- You'll no longer be able to access CITES network services such as UIUC Dialup Access and CITES Instructional Computing Sites. If you wish to retain Internet access, you'll need to find a new Internet service provider (ISP). Some options are described below under Finding a New Electronic Home.
Discontinuation of your email account means:
- You'll no longer have access to your Express Email account.
- Your email account will no longer accept incoming email. However, you may use the UIUC Electronic Directory forwarding service to redirect any new email you receive at NetID@uiuc.edu to a different email account for one year. Instructions on how to do so are available under Forwarding Email. (Note that the only way to redirect your NetID@uiuc.edu email is through the UIUC Electronic Directory forwarding service. If you use CITES Express Email forwarding to redirect your email, it will no longer function once your account is discontinued.)
- If you've subscribed to any mailing lists using your UIUC email account, you'll need to change your subscription before your email account is discontinued to reflect your new email address. The reason for this is that certain mailing lists will not allow you to make changes to your subscription from an email account different from the one with which you originally subscribed to the list.
Discontinuation of your NetFiles account means:
- You'll no longer be able to log in or access your files.
- Any web pages you have published will no longer be available to other users.
- You should make arrangements to relocate any files and web pages you have on NetFiles to your own computer, to another service, or to the web publishing/file storage services offered by an Internet Service Provider (ISP). (See Finding a New Electronic Home below.)
Finding a New Electronic Home
Before you lose your email account and network access, you should make arrangements to establish a new account with another organization. Some options are listed below. Once you have a new account, you may set up email forwarding.
- Email accounts for graduates: The University of Illinois Alumni Association offers all alumni a free, web-based email address and account. To register for an account, go to http://www.illinoisalumni.org. If you have questions about the email service or the Alumni Association, please send email to alumni@uillinois.edu or call 217-333-1471.
- Other institutions (work or school): Many institutions, both corporate and educational, provide their members with network access similar to that provided at UIUC. Be sure, however, to check the network usage policy of any organization you are joining before moving files or forwarding mail to an account provided by it.
- Internet Service Providers (ISPs): Private ISPs allow you to establish an electronic presence independent of any organizational affiliation you may have. For a listing of commercial ISPs, refer to the local Yellow Pages.
Forwarding Email
Once you've established another email account, you may begin forwarding your UIUC email to your new account by using the UIUC Electronic Directory forwarding service, which will work for one year after your account is discontinued. The Electronic Directory forwarding service will forward any email sent to your NetID-based address, written as NetID@uiuc.edu. You should always use NetID@uiuc.edu as your return address, as email sent to NetID@express.cites.uiuc.edu will not be forwarded and will be rejected after your email account is discontinued. (Note that the only way to redirect your NetID@uiuc.edu email is through the UIUC Electronic Directory forwarding service. If you use CITES Express Email forwarding to redirect your email, it will no longer function once your account is deactivated.)
To set up email forwarding via the Electronic Directory:
- Go to the Electronic Directory Editor at http://ede.cites.uiuc.edu
- Click on the link entitled Click Here To Edit Entries.
- Enter your NetID and NetID password when prompted.
- If you have more than one entry, you will be presented with a list of entries that you can edit. From that list, select your NetID entry. If you have only one entry, proceed to step 5.
- Find the field entitled email and enter your new email address, complete with the @ sign (e.g., my_new_name@gmail.com).
- Click Apply.
- Log out as instructed.
It may take up to two hours for this change to become effective. Once effective, all email sent to NetID@uiuc.edu will be forwarded to the new destination.
